  3. Stages in the life cycle • Birth – The organism’s life begins. • Growth and change – The organism gets larger. It may take on a new form. • Reproduction – The organism creates new organisms like itself. • Death – The organism’s life ends.

  4. Life cycle of a monarch butterfly • Egg • The female lays eggs on a leaf. Each egg grows until it is ready to hatch.

  5. Life cycle of a monarch butterfly • Caterpillar • After about 1 week, a caterpillar hatches from the egg. The caterpillar eats often. It is storing food energy for the next stage in its life cycle.

  6. Life cycle of a monarch butterfly • Pupa • The caterpillar stops eating. It forms a hard case around itself called a pupa. Inside, the caterpillar goes through many changes.

  7. Life cycle of the monarch butterfly • Adult • After about a week, the adult butterfly comes out. Its body is now completely different. A female butterfly will lay eggs to start a new life cycle.

  9. Metamorphosis means a change in the body form of an organism.

  10. Almost all animals come from eggs. Some hatch outside of the mother’s body, like frogs and birds. Some grow and develop in the female’s body. They look like the adults. They do no undergo metamorphosis.
