Common Core State Standards Goals • Common Core State standards are set by the state to prepare Florida’s students to effectively engage, communicate, and compete globally with students around the world. • You can access the state standards at www.cpalms.org/public • This information can also be found in your 2018-2019 Promotion Brochure

  5. Subjects/Materials • Math – GO Math /Think Central • Reading/ELA – Wonders / Connect Ed • Science – HMH Florida Science • Social Studies – Current Event/ Themes • Technology –I Ready Reading/Math • AR/ Fast Math/ Read Naturally / Achieve

  6. Math Instruction • The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt series called Go Math! Is used for math instruction and homework practice. • Manipulatives are used frequently. • Number Talk / Problem Solving • Think Central Website

  7. Reading, Grammar, & Spelling Instruction • Reading Lessons are on a 7 day rotation Testing every 7th day • Spelling test every 5th day • A new Study Guide will be sent home at the start of a new lesson. • Whole/small group instruction • Independent Work

  8. Writing Instruction • Direct writing instruction is given throughout the week via the Wonders curriculum. The students have opportunities to show their progress by writing stories and responding to stories. • Focus on neat handwriting with proper letter formation. • Correct use of capitalization and punctuation marks are expected during all writing.

  9. Promotion Expectations for Second Grade • Students must pass all subject areas with 70% or better! • Students must pass assessments @70% or higher. • Students must be reading fluently at 90 or more words per minute. • Students must make a years growth on STAR test or be at a level 3 in the 53 or higher percentile.

  10. More Grade Expectations Achieve 3000- 40activities/ semester @ 75% or higher Read Naturally – 7 assignments passed /month AR – 2 test /week @ 80% or higher I Ready Reading/ Math – daily @ 75% or higher

  11. Homework • Homework contract was sent home. • Homework is given on a weekly basis. • Students should read for 15 minutes and record on reading log each night with parent a signature. • 2 Reading comprehension practice per week • Daily MATH practice • Spelling / Writing/ Grammar

Grading Policy on Focus • Tests/Quizzes weight is 80% • Classwork/Participation weight is 10% • Homework/Participation weight is 10% • Grading Scale • A= 90-100% • B= 80-89% • C= 70-79% • D=60-69% • F=59% and below • The FOCUS Parent Portal letter was sent home with the student ID and parent pin. We encourage you to register and set up the app on your cell phone. See your child’s teacher if you need another form.

  13. Report Cards • Report Cards will go home each nine weeks. • Please sign the report card envelope and send only the envelope back the following day. • Progress reports will go home at least once each nine weeks. • Parents are encourage to monitor your child’s • grades and attendance on FOCUS.

  14. Behavior • Discipline Policy was sent home. • Please check your child’s behavior daily, sign to acknowledge it each day. • Decision Dollars Award for Paw Shop each month • Treasure Box/ Calls Home / Lunch with Teacher / Notes Home / Treats

  18. Reminders • SNACKS:Snacks do not take the place of lunch. The teacher will decide a time for class snacks. Please try to send healthy snacks. The school will provide one Tues. – Thurs. • TOYS & OTHER THINGS THAT DON’T BELONG:. Please check your child’s backpacks on a regular basis for toys and other personal items that are not allowed at school. • If your child brings a phone he/she is not allowed to have it on during school hours. • COMMUNICATION is KEY : Don’t forget to sign up for a conference … the first nine week conference is mandatory. • Field Trips: Several will be planned throughout the year. (First one scheduled for Nov.16th Drama Production info forth coming).
