  2. Meet Brenda Brenda is just like you and me. She’s a busy woman, who swears by her smartphone, tablet and laptop. She drives mostly the same routes everyday, so she often gets bored by the drive. She knows she SHOULDN’T be multi-tasking while driving, but doesn’t see the harm in shooting a quick text or checking her email to make the drive more engaging. How do we get Brenda to drive safely?

  3. D.I.V.E: Driving In Virtual Environments Beach Theme Original Jungle Theme D.I.V.E is an interface that allows Brenda to completely customize her driving environment. It uses a heads-up display and intuitive traffic interpretation via fun themes that Brenda can enjoy. The result is to effectively engage Brendaand make her a safer driver.

  4. Application 1: Need for Engagement Brenda finds that she is sleepy today. So, she decides to use D.I.V.E As an added measure to stay awake, she picks out the Jungle Theme.

  5. Application 2: Limiting GPS as a distraction Activating the GPS produces a wise baboon in front of her. All Brenda needs to do is follow him. She’s just glad she doesn’t have to shift between the road and her GPS screen. Original Environment Themed Interpretation

  6. Application 2: More Intuitive GPS When the baboon indicates a right turn, Brenda automatically turns with him. Brenda Baboon Brenda’s View

  7. Application 3: More Engaging Traffic RulesUh-oh, Brenda sees an elephant blocking the road. She’d better stop.Usually, this would have been the perfect time to read a new text. Instead, she enjoys watching the elephant pass by her, and then resumes driving.

  8. Application 4: Visually Impaired SituationsBrenda considers moving to the lane on her left, but is stopped by a deafening lion roar. She looks to her left and sees a “lion” that had been in her blind spot run past her. View from the car Car (Lion) in the blind spot Brenda Lion ROAR!!!!

  9. Everyday Applications The same applications can serve a more basic function if Brenda doesn’t want to use an entire theme: 1. GPS Brenda’s route is highlighted on the display. 2. Traffic Rules The Display System is tinted red when approaching a stop sign. 3. Visual Impairment The side with an approaching car lights up
