4th Hour- Week of 3/18 • Find your seat quickly and quietly. • Get your laptop, but keep it closed. Put it under your desk. • Take out your notebook and turn to a new page. • Title it “Using Quotation Marks” • Add this to your table of Contents. • Work on your dissecting a prompt worksheet or read silently until I begin class.
Using Quotation marks • Use quotation marks to set off a direct quotation. • Direct quotation is something that someone said word-for-word. • For example: Correct: "I hope you will be here," he said. Incorrect: He said that he "hoped I would be there." (The quotation marks are incorrect because hoped I would be there does not state the speaker's exact words.)
Dialogue Tags • Use a dialogue tag to introduce who is saying the quote. • For example: He said, she asked, it cried, we exclaimed, they argued etc
Capitalization • If the quotation is a complete sentence, ALWAYS capitalize the first word in the quotation, even midsentence. • For example: Correct:Lamarr said, "The case is far from over, and we will win.” Incorrect: Lamarr said, “the case is far from over, and we will win.” • But do not capitalize it if the quotation completes the sentence. • For example: Correct:Lamarrsaid the case is “far from over” and that “we will win.” Incorrect: Lamarrsaid the case is “Far from over” and that “We will win.”
Punctuation- Commas • Use commas to introduce or interrupt direct quotations. • Examples:He said, "I don't care.""Why," I asked, "don't you care?" • This rule is optional with one-word quotations. • Example: He said "Stop."
Punctuation with dialogue tags • If that quotation comes before a dialogue tag, end it with a comma, not a period inside the quotation marks. This includes one-word quotations. Examples:"I don't care," he said."Stop," he said.
Punctuation- Periods • Periods (and commas) go inside the quotation marks. • Examples:The sign said, "Walk." Then it said, "Don't Walk," then, "Walk," all within thirty seconds. He yelled, "Hurry up."
Punctuation- Question Marks • The placement of question marks with quotation marks follows logic. If a question is within the quoted material, a question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks. • Examples:She asked, "Will you still be my friend?"The question Will you still be my friend? is part of the quotation. • Do you agree with the saying, "All's fair in love and war"?The question Do you agree with the saying? is outside the quotation.
Elipsis • Use ellipsis to indicate that you left out part of the quote or there is more to the quote than what you included. • Use Brackets if you need to change or add words, letters, etc. • For example: • Original direct quotation: • “It is widely acknowledged that today’s drivers do more than just drive. Whether the distraction arises from built-in ‘infotainment’ systems or from portable electronic devices brought into the vehicle, drivers have a wide array of nondriving tasks available to them at any given time” (Salvucci and Taatgen 67). • Quotation with ellipsis and brackets usedcorrectly: • “It is widely acknowledged that today’s drivers do more than just drive. . . . [D]rivers have a wide array of nondriving tasks available to them at any given time” (Salvucci and Taatgen 67).
