Extant Lithuanian Vital records • An estimated 500,000 records have survived and reside at the Vilna Archives • A large portion are for the city of Vilna and towns of the Vilna district • Over 100 towns represented
Preservation of the Metrical Registers • The GSU [Mormon Church] came to agreement with the Lithuanian Archives [Vilna] to film the Metrical Register books • Record books were filmed; Indexes to the records for most towns were not released for filming • Filming was completed and the GSU provided an index to the records [by town] which is found on the JewishGen web site at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/FHLC/VilnaMicrofilmsIndex.htm • GSU web site contains similar information www.familysearch.org . See the Family History Catalog and select a Placename search
Current access to the records • The GSU films are available at your local Family History Library. Films are retrieved from Salt Lake City and delivered to the local FHL for your use on-site.
LitvakSIG Vital Records Indexing Project • The LitvakSIG entered into an agreement with the GSU which provides they will supply the LitvakSIG digital images of the films • In return, the LitvakSIG is to provide the GSU with whatever translations we produce. • This project started several years ago [2001] and data from many films has been sorted by town. • The large, remaining task is to translate the records.
Scope of Records • Some towns have records spanning 1854-1915 • Others are more limited and span roughly 1890-1915 • Refer to either LitvakSIG or FamilySearch.org web sites
Vilna Records • Span the greatest period of time - 1837-1915 • Records are in a variety of languages • Russian only • Russian and Hebrew • Polish and Hebrew • German and Hebrew • Lithuanian and Yiddish • Quality varies due to age and handwriting; much improvement can be made to images with digital enhancement [programs such as Paint Shop Pro] • Many metrical register books have duplicates • Various other documents have made their way into the records: • a Ketubah simply to mark the beginning of the marriage records • Entire Vilna city directory for 1911 was made part of the collection
