  2. Robert Hooke - 1665 discovered and named cells

  3. Francesco Redi - 1668 disproved spontaneous generation (living things cannot come from non-living things)

  4. Anton van Leeuwenhoek - 1680 “Father of microscopy” Made the first microscope

  5. Carolus Linnaeus - 1735 “Father of taxonomy” (how we classify organisms) Came up with binomial nomenclature (2 part naming system)

  6. Robert Brown - 1831 Discovered the nucleus inside the cell

  7. Matthias Schleiden - 1838 discovered that all plants are made of cells

  8. Theodor Schwann - 1838 Figured out that all animals are made of cells

  9. Rudolf Virchow - 1860 discovered that all cells come from other cells

  10. Cell Theory Schleiden, Schwann and Virchow together made the cell theory

  11. Charles Darwin - 1859 Known for his theory of evolution Came up with the concept of natural selection “survival of the fittest”

  12. Gregor Mendel - 1865 “Father of heredity” (genetics) He bred pea plants and found out how traits are passed from parent to offspring

  13. Louis Pastuer - 1866 Created the first vaccines to prevent diseases Came up with the process of pasteurization

  14. Walther Flemming - 1882 Discovered how cells reproduce and called it mitosis

  15. Francis Crick & James Watson-1953 Together they discovered the structure of DNA (DNA is a double helix -spiral staircase)

  16. Rachel Carson -1962 First environmentalist who fought for safe drinking water Created the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

  17. Ian Wilmut - 1997 Cloned the first sheep in 1997 named Dolly
