  2. What is Advanced Placement? Advanced Placement (AP) is an opportunity for students to take more rigorous courses; boost their GPA, and earn college credit.

  3. What are the benefits of AP? • Students are exposed to more rigorous instruction • College Level • Prepare for AP Exam for college credit • Students can boost their GPA • AP classes earn 6 points on the 4-point scale • Regular class A = 4; AP class A = 6

  4. What are the expectations for AP students? • AP courses require serious commitment • Consistent independent study and reading • Completion of summer assignments • Keeping up with all work • Afterschool tutoring • Weekend mock exams • Students will sign a contract stating that they will complete the class and take the AP Exam

  5. What are the expectations of AP parents? • Accountability • It is imperative that you hold your child to a high standard of work and study • Availability • Transportation • Conferences

AP vs. Honors AP • Most rigorous instruction on campus • Two-point GPA boost • High requirements for student accountability • Opportunity for college credit Honors • More rigorous than normal classes • One-point GPA boost • High requirements for student accountability • No college credit available

AP vs. Dual Enrollment AP • College credit granted if student passes the AP exam in May • Offered at South Lake High School • Follows normal school schedule Dual Enrollment • College credit for passing the class • Classes must be taken at LSCC’s campus • Does not sync with Lake County Schools’ calendar

Course Offerings • American History* • World History* • European History • American Government* • Macroeconomics* • Human Geography • Calculus* • Statistics* • English Language and Comp* • English Literature and Comp* • Chemistry* • Biology* • Environmental Science* • Psychology • Studio Art • Spanish Literature *These courses meet core graduation requirements

Course Formats • Some courses are all year long • i.e., students will take Honors Biology in the fall, then AP Biology in the spring • Typically done with math and science courses • Some courses are offered on a “skinny” schedule • i.e., student will go to AP US History one day, then AP English Language the next; this lasts all year

  10. Skinny Courses • AP US History – AP English Language • AP World History – Pre-AP World Literature • AP US Government – AP Macroeconomics • These courses are only ½ credit, so the skinny ends in January
