Getting the message
As a common understanding, interpreting is the act of reproducing a speech orally from one language to another.
“Interpreting consists in presentation in the target language (TL), the exact meaning of what is uttered in the source language (SL) either consecutively or simultaneously, preserving the tone of the speaker.” (Bell, 1991)
The interpreter has to understand ideas, not words.
The interpreter must listen and keep asking, “ What does the speaker mean?”
The first key to understand a speech is the identification of the main idea, the second is the analysis of the links between those ideas.
