  1. How do I choose a preschool for my child? Finding a quality preschool or child care provider can be daunting. Here are some tips that will help you find the right preschool for your child's needs. The key to choosing the right preschool is going into the process prepared. Prepared? Yes, prepared with a solid idea of what you want your child to gain from his or her preschool experience. This article provides helpful suggestions for choosing a preschool that is a good match for your child and your family, as well as information on some of the most popular types of preschool educational philosophies. 1. Determine What Is Important to You No matter what all the experts say, you are your child's biggest advocate and the best judge of what type of environment he'll do best in. Think about your child's personality. Is he shy? Does she make friends quickly? What do you want from your child's preschool? Are you looking for a rigorous academic program or something more socially-based? 2. Create a List of Schools you are interested in There are a lot of different options out there. It's up to you to weed through them all and determine the best fit. So where do you start? Ask around. Anyone you know with kids is a good person to query, whether you know them from work, the neighborhood, playgroup or the library. In particular, focus on the folks who have kids close in age to yours and whose kids have similar personalities. You may even want to have a chat with your pediatrician about what she thinks, especially if your child has some underlying medical issues. 3. Staff who receives adequate training. The preschool director should be able to provide information about CPR training for teachers, as well as what professional development the staff receives. 4. Print-Rich Classrooms. Look for words labelling parts of the classroom and lots of books. Watch for teachers writing down children’s stories and look for kid-made books. These are just a few ways to spot a print-rich environment. 5. Transportation and Distance Are Also Important How will your child get to school? Will she ride a bus or will you pick her up and drop her off? How far away is the school from your home? These may seem like secondary concerns, but they are very important. If it takes a long time to get to school, your child may be too excited by the time they get there.

  2. At the same time, if preschool also functions as day care for your child, a long car ride may serve as important quality time for your family.
