Summary YOU • Pick Schools • Fill out their applications • Pay for Application (if Full Pay Lunch) • Send them your SAT Scores • Ask 2 teachers for Letters of Recommendation • Wait a few weeks and call schools to see if they are missing anything • Apply for Scholarships (Free Money) • Fill out the FAFSA Financial Aid Form (Free and Borrowed Money) • Choose the school that accepts you and fits you best Me • Send Transcript • Send School Profile • Send my Letter of Recommendation Others • Write and Send Letter of Recommendation

  3. College Search • Start with a list of 10 -Based from SAT Scores, GPA, $ and Major • 3 Reach • 4 Match • 3 Safe

  4. Types of Schools

  5. Campus Tours, PSA Visits • Weekday trips to schools by you and your family • Trust your gut • Listen to PSA Announcements for Representative visits to PSA and Field Trips from PSA

  6. SATs • Most students take SAT 2 times total • Sign up on CollegeBoard.org • Saturday test at High School by your house • 50 dollars if signed up by registration date • Free for Free/Reduced Lunch students (2) • Mr. Wry has the waivers • Extra 27 dollar fee if signed up after registration date

  7. Common Application • Accepted by 90% of US Colleges • MAKE SURE Common App Email Address, DOB, and First/Last Name all match your Naviance account Email • Have both up when creating Common App • Both will speak to each other and colleges will love YOU!

  8. Commonapp.org • Write down username/password • Takes a lot of time for 1st college, but every college after is very very quick

  9. Paper/Online School Specific Applications • Not in Naviance • Should only be completed when school didn’t join Common Application

  10. Connection.naviance.com/psct • First Initial followed by last name (no spaces, dots, etc.) psapsa was initial password for all • EVERY SCHOOL YOU APPLY TO VIA COMMON APP OR PAPER/ONLINE MUST BE IN YOUR NAVIANCE ACCOUNT

  11. College Essay • Done in English class • Topics listed on Common App. or from school • Cut and Paste into Common App. or send to school

  12. Paying for Application • Free Lunch Students • 8 Free Applications • 4 CollegeBoard Waivers • 4 NACAC Waivers • Reduced Lunch Students • 4 Free Applications • 2 CollegeBoard Waivers • 2 NACAC Waivers Mr. Wry has the waivers

  13. Sending Your SAT Scores • Must be done by you from CollegeBoard website directly to each College • 11 dollars per school

  14. Sending Your Transcript • Can only be sent to colleges listed in your Naviance account • School Counselor will send them when notified of submitted applications

  15. Resume’ • Finalize and give to 2 teachers:

  16. Letters (2) of Recommendation • Give teachers 2 weeks to complete • Teachers will submit in their Naviance account

  17. Finish By Thanksgiving

Scholarships and FAFSA • Scholarships • Similar Application/Supplements to College Applications, but for Public/Private foundations • #1-Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (due Feb. 1) • Additional need: Parents 2012 Tax Return • Other Scholarships usually due March 1. • Additional need: Parents 2013 Tax Return

  19. FAFSA • Not in NAVIANCE • Fafsa.gov • Start with 2012 Tax Return, but Completed after Parents 2013 Tax Return • Encourage them to do it in February NOT APRIL • Financial Aid • Scholarships (You don’t pay back FREE) • Loans (You pay back slowly and cheaply) • Grants (You don’t pay back FREE) • Work Study (Campus Job)

  20. Acceptances • Paper, Text, or Mail • Aid Package comes later • Deposit in May Waitlisted • Paper, Text, or Mail • They wait until after Deposit dates • They inform you by June 1
