  1. Open your notebook to new section • Title: Systems • In your notebook, • 1) List at least five systems. Be as diverse as possible. • 2) Write your best definition for systems.

  2. Learning Target: • I will know and be able to draw with pictures in my science notebooks the answers to the three system questions for an original example.

  3. Explaining Things OWL Eligible Not OWL Eligible Do a practice test online. Do it by yourself and really well? A) Could count as OWLS B) Grade is raised C) Could still slip into science fair. If grade is lower than you want, you can take OWLS next week. • Pass your OWLS? Good grade – ready for science fair. • Find a project and have it approved before 11/27. • Don’t pass your OWLS? Cannot do a full science fair project. Cannot redo them until January.

  4. Doing your OWLS • 1) READ INSTRUCTIONS on page 2. • 2) ON the top of your OWLS write “DO NOT WRITE ON THIS.” • 3) Use your science notebook. Take home but bring to school for class. • 4) NO ONE MAY HELP YOU. If you have questions, e-mail me. • 5) Do on your own paper. • 6) Copy the promise statement and make sure you AND parent sign it. It is not graded without that.

  5. Other announcements: • New tardy policy. • If you are tardy by not being here OR not doing warmup up AND there are more than three of you, at least one person will win an All Expensed Paid After School Seminar on the benefits of Punctuality. • Winner of Two Truths and a Lie - Haven

  6. Activity Number One • I need four volunteers. • RULES FOR THE GAME: Everyone needs to stay equidistant from the two rabbits. Don’t stare at them. Just wander and try and follow the rules. • Rabbits: Don’t just walk in a circle. Go slowly so folks can adjust, but change direction, pace, etc. • Debrief: Why was it difficult to learn the rules of this system?

  7. Activity Number Two: • You will be timed – this is a class competition. • Clock starts when Mr. Jamsa says now. • Everyone in the class must touch the ball. • When that happens, the clock will stop.

  8. Definition for your Dictionary (not on test) • System: Whenever parts combine together to form a whole. The whole is different than the sum of it’s part. • Examples: Solar system, nervous system, toaster

  9. 1) What are the parts of the system? • Example: Soccer team • Goalie, strikers, uniforms, soccer balls, etc.

  10. 2) How does the system function as a whole? • Soccer team works together to follow by the rules and win the game.

  11. 3) What larger systems is the current system a part of? • A) Soccer League • B) Silverton • C) Oregon • D) Swiss Soccer Federation • E) Universe • F) Etc

  12. In your notebooks: • Answer the three system questions for one of the following examples: • A) Mark Twain School • B) Human Body • C) Toaster

  13. 3 Systems Questions • 1) What are the parts of the System? • 2) How does the system function as a whole? • 3) What systems are the current system a part of?

  14. Create your own example in your notebook now: • Choose a system • Answer the three system questions for your system with pictures in your notebook. • Share with your table mates.
