  2. What is Diversity • Definition: Differences in region, religion, culture, languages, clothes, food habits etc. is known as Diversity • Unique geography of India and history are two main factors for diversity

Why there is Diversity? • Dependency on social groups for fulfillment of needs – family/ community/ nation/ universe • Inequality in the society (rich/ poor/ untouchables) • Migration to other places (Job/ Trade/ War/ Drought/ Famine/ Partition of nations/ Search of new places) • Some stayed there for long time and adopted regional culture and practices (every region has its unique history) Positive & Negative impact - Brainstorm

Main Factors Influencing Diversity • Travel/ Migration/ Atmosphere –Geographical perspective • Unique regional practices & their gradual adoption with time –Historic perspective Examples: • Different trade and agricultural practices (Rural/ Urban; Sea side/ Hilly regions) • Regional foods/ clothes/ languages

Kerala • Surrounded by sea and hills • Famous for Spices – pepper, cardamom and cloves • Jews and Arabs came first for trade • Spread of Christianity (Apostle of Christ, St. Thomas – 2000 years ago) • Ibn Battuta – wrote about life of Muslims • Vasco da Gama came from Portugal (sea route) • Fishing nets – Chinese –cheena-vala (Utensils to fry Cheenachatti) • Rice, fish and vegetables

Unity in Diversity • Independence movement in India – different people fought together, went to jail • Divide and Rule – failed • General Dyre–Jallianwala Bagh Massacre – Hindus and Muslims, Rich and Poor • Songs and Symbols emerged from freedom struggle; National Anthem by Rabindranath Tagore; Indian flag • Discovery of India (by Nehru): Unity is from within – tolerance and compassion – He has given the phrase “Unity in Diversity”
