  1. AS Media Studies – BLOG and Revision for the next 4 weeks Monday 15th April 2013 Unit G322: Key Concepts Exam

Aims & Objectives Why? • Re-cap prior learning of Section A and B. • Go through some updates to the BLOG and inform you of how this needs to be treated as YOUR VLE! • Look at what you can now access and teach you some new theory/key terminology that WILL allow you to succeed in the retake in 4 weeks time. • YOU WILL be given the opportunity to complete some independent revision in the lesson as well today. • Review the learning. So you can succeed in the exam!

Section A and B DO’s DON’T’s • Make sure you link your evidence to the area of representation (Section A) OR Language from the Question (Section B) • Use LOTS of media language in your answer! • Structure your answer clearly. • Give relevant examples – e.g DON’T write about Class in the exam if they are asking you to evaluate the representation of Ethnicity. • Refer to EACH technical area in detail (Section A) • Give Contemporary and relevant case study examples (Section B) • Give theory/key terms that are NOT relevant to the area of of representation (Section A) OR Language from the Question (Section B) • Write an answer for both Sections that is no less than 1 1/2 sides. • Use theory such as John Fiske (1987) • Use examples from earlier than 2009 (Section B)

  4. YOU MUST write down AT LEAST 4 examples of elements associated to EACH of the features below. YOU COULD give more than 4 examples.

Watch the following sequence: • Make sure you have the ‘Section A: TV DRAMA TEXTUAL ANALYSIS (50 Marks) – Resources’ Page open – go to Disability. • How isthisrepresented to the audience in the sequence? • WhatTechnical areas help definethisrepresentation? • YOU SHOULD make notes on the sequence and thenprovide a summary for EACH of the technical areas. • YOU WILL thenneed to write a detailedanalysis on ONE of the technical areas of yourchoice.

  6. YOU MUST write down 3 examples of facts associated to the film industry you already know. YOU COULD give more than 4 examples.

  8. “Mind Map” - Task • Go onto the following pages underneath Section B: Film Industry: • ‘Taken 2’ (2012) • ‘Ken Loach British Film’. • YOU MUST divide your A3 Page (or page in your exercise book) into the 7 sections YOU WILL need to know in relation to your own case studies as well in preparation for the exam. • Then, write down x3 facts/statistics/ideologies associated to each one from each page. • Finally, YOU SHOULD identify any relationships/patterns/differences between the 2 case studies.

  9. Remainder of the lesson: Explore the BLOG and write down/”mind-map”/produce Flash Cards/Your own Revision PowerPoint on the information available to your for Section A and B. YOU SHOULD build on this gained knowledge by researching and uploading content that is relevant to your own chosen case studies. YOU COULD practice answering a question in timed conditions using one of the past papers available OR look at other resources available to you such as the Mark Scheme.

Aims & Objectives Why? • We will go through the expectations of the Exam in relation to 2 Case Study examples YOU SHOULD refer to in the exam, alongside your own Case Study examples. • We will apply this evidence and case study material to an exam paper question. • YOU WILL hand this is in for marking against the mark scheme (which is available on the BLOG) • Review the learning and set homework for next lesson. So you can succeed in the exam!

  14. YOU MUST write down what Marketing is. YOU SHOULD give 1 example of a strategy for EACH Media Platform. e.g Poster = Print Media Platform YOU COULD explain how x1 of these methods is appealing to an institution in targeting an audience.

  16. Trailer Comparison YOU MUST, In pairs, watch both trailers together and identify which codes & conventions stand out as similar OR different in terms of marketing strategies.

DO! • Give Case Study examples, make them relevant and make comparisons. • Focus on the Industry process in terms of a films PDME. • Refer to theory/key terminology quickly! • Give statistics/facts that demonstrate your understanding. • DON’T! • Explain what the film is about in terms of narrative. • Justify or explain what theory/key terms are. • Give brief examples – LOTS OF DETAIL IS EXPECTED!

  19. YOU WILL learn how to apply relevant Case Study examples to answering this question “step-by-step”. YOU MUST make notes on the Case Study examples. YOU WILL be given the opportunity to plan an answer to the question based on the Case Study material you will be presented, as well as reflecting on your own research. THEN, you will answer the question in 45 minutes Exam conditions for effective practice and preparation for the exam.

Comparison between 2 very different strategies and case study examples. What is actually being sold? Is it appealing – Compare! Does it influence our knowledge of the film and our chances of consuming it?

YOU MUST find examples of how the film was promoted across the media platforms on the BLOG Page. YOU MUST also find x1 example of Synergy with another global brand that helped the film’s success.

YOU MUST be strict with yourself in keeping to these time constraints. YOU MAY use the notes you have made in the lesson today, however this may end up harming your time management strategy.
