  2. The University of the Third Age • Founded in France in 1972. • Started in Australia in 1985. • Started in Sydney in 1988. • U3A now has over 53,000 members in Australia in 165 plus branches. • Sydney U3A inc has over 5480 members.

  3. What is a University? • Based on the mediaeval Latin word ‘universitas’, - that is a group of people getting together to learn for pleasure. • An institute of learning designed to educate. • “Anything considered as a source of learning”. Macquarie dictionary

  4. U3A Membership Numbers

  5. Entry Requirements forSYDNEY U3A inc. • Over 50 years of age, or younger 'retirees‘. • Those not in full time employment. • $10-00 to join, plus $45-00* per annum. • *subject to annual review.

  6. Membership Means • Affordable learning – run by volunteers. • Ability to enrol in any lecture having space for more participants, or, to put yourself on the waiting list. • Attend any meeting within the Sydney U3A inc region. • Participate as a volunteer in giving lectures. • Volunteer Course Leaders are always welcome.

  7. Can I join any study group? • No entry requirements, but the leader, or booking clerk, should be initially contacted as the particular venue of choice may not be able to accommodate any extra participants. Always put your name on the waiting list as openings do occur. • No extra study fees (perhaps, a fee to cover hand-out costs @ 20 cents per sheet). • Participants must sign in when attending a class. • Persons attending classes can opt to purchase Tea/Coffee plus a biscuit during the break for $1-00.. • No examinations. • Make new friends!!!!
