Who is Food Insecure in LA? • According to UCLA’s Center for Health Policy Research: • 200,000 hungry in LA • 560,000 food insecure • Who is hungry? • Not just “poor” – although LA has plenty. • Schwartz & Wilson – 30% of income on rent is burden. % HH Rent as a percent of income> 30% = total HH paying rent > 30 % / Total HH % HH on public assistance = Total households on public assistance/ total households. Is there equal access to grocery stores across LA County? • Food Deserts: • Lack of grocery stores • Low income families • Public transportation issues • Health issues: • Malnutrition with obesity • Diabetes • Heart Disease “Once upon a time, this city was full of grocery stores. Then came urban renewal/an economic downturn/a mass exodus of the wealthy and, one by one, the groceries closed up and moved to the outskirts of the city.
