  1. Welcome to Second Grade Ms. Daniel and Mrs. Klott

  2. Mrs. Klott’s background and Family I am married and have 2 children. My daughter Kara is 30 and graduated from University of Texas Medical School in 2015 and is serving her country as a doctor in the United States Navy. She and her husband have a little boy Jonathan Thomas, who just turned two, and a daughter, Olivia Nicole, who is 3 months old. They reside in Fort Worth, Texas where she is serving as a flight surgeon. My son Kameron is 27 and lives in Denver Colorado with his wife Dr. Anastasia Klott. He has decided to go back to school and get a 2nd degree in Information Technology at University of Denver, while his wife Anastasia is completing her fellowship in pediatric psychiatry. This is my 27thyear teaching 2nd grade! I have taught at E.A. Jones, Sienna Crossing and Scanlan. I absolutely love working with 2nd graders, they are the best!

  3. Ms. Daniel’s Background and Family Hi! I am Jordan Daniel, your child’s second grade teacher! I was born and raised in Houston, Texas and attended Fort Bend ISD schools. I graduated from Clements High School. I went to college in Louisiana and attended Louisiana State University. GEAUX TIGERS!  This is my third year teaching. I have a four-year-old daughter named Chloe Jade. She is a sweet little girl who keeps me very busy. She loves all things pink, Disney and loves to be outside! In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, shopping and making memories with my daughter!

  6. Grades *Each nine weeks the report card grade will be made up of the following grades: Daily and Major grades are weighted 50% each. Reading- 9 grades total: at least 3 major and 6 daily Language Arts- 9 grades total: at least 3 major and 6 daily Math-9 grades - at least 3 major and 6 daily grades Science/ Social Studies- 9 grades each total: at least 3 major and 6 daily grades. *These are minimum amounts, there may be times when there are more grades in each subject area.

  7. Re-teaching and Reassessment Re-teaching is a necessary component in mastery of the taught curriculum. Re-teaching must occur whenever the teacher determines that a student has not mastered the objective(s) in the taught curriculum at the independent practice or assessment level. The decision as to how to reassess objectives that are re-taught is the option of the classroom teacher. • Retesting guidelines apply to major grades only. Daily grades, quizzes, and projects are not included in the retesting guidelines. • Students who received a score of 74 or below on a major grade must retest; the retest may include items from all objectives covered on the original assessment or only those objectives not mastered by the student. • In the event of a retest, the teacher will reteach necessary objects. • The highest grade that may be earned on a retest is 75.

  8. Homework and Digital Resources • Your child has access to multiple digital resources to assist them in meeting their academic goals. Each student will be given a digital resource card with url addresses usernames and passwords for each of these resources. Classroom teachers and campus specialists are training students on how to use these websites in class so that they can access them at home. Here are the digital resources we will use in 2nd grade. • www.reflexmath.com (Reflex Math) • www.educationgalaxy.com (Education Galaxy) • www.khanacademy.com (khan Academy) • www.fortbendisd.com (Schoology) • www.readtheory.com (Read Theory) • There is no assigned or required homework in 2nd grade. Parents can decide which resources their child will benefit from using at home, and students can work at their own pace on their own time. Teachers and specialist will assign digital lessons for the students to work on in class or at home each week that follow curriculum standards.

Does Neat & Orderly Work After 2 reports are sent home in one week, students will then have their behavior recorded on a Level 1 discipline log.

Tuesday Folder The number of points lost during the week will determine the marks in the Tuesday folder. 0-2points lost E 3-5points lost S 6-8points lost N 9 or more points lost U For the report card: The number of each conduct marks will determine what is marked on the report card. 0-2S marks for the nine weeks = E 3 or more S marks for the nine weeks =S 0-2N marks for the nine weeks = S 3-4N marks for the nine weeks = N 5 or more N marks for the nine weeks = U Fun Friday: Students who have earned 20 points for the week will have the opportunity to attend Fun Friday.

  11. Do and Don’t • Do arrive before 8:10 a.m. or you will be tardy. • Do not pick up your child early unless it is an emergency or doctor’s appt. • Do have you child dress appropriately, and put their name in their coats, sweatshirts, and any other items that can be misplaced. • Don’t forget to check their backpacks for homework, and other school info, especially on Tuesdays. • Do pack a healthy snack; try to stay away from sugary snacks. • Don’t forget to send a note to school if your child can’t participate in physical education class or recess. • Do have your child wear appropriate shoes; remember they have recess every day. • Do notify your child’s teacher as early as possible for dismissal changes • Do check-in at the office when visiting the school. • Don’t drop off students in the back after 8:10 a.m., bring them to the front of the school. • Do send an email to both the teacher and attendanceSOE@fortbendisd.com if your child is absent. • Don’t forget you have five days to get an excused note in to school from the day your child returns to school. • Do alert the school nurse of any special health concerns • Don’t send any medicine to school with your child.

  12. Attendance Reminders • Students arriving after 8:10 a.m. will be considered tardy. Early pickups will count the same as tardies due to missed instruction time. • If a student has five or more tardies/early pick-ups, without a doctors note in a grading period, he/she will receive an “N” (needs improvement) on his/her report card under “follows school regulations”. • An excuse note for your child’s absence must be provided to the campus Attendance Clerk (Kelley Dotson) within five days of his/her return to school. Please email all attendance issues to attendanceSOE@fortbendisd.com • Notes received after the five day window will be kept on file, but the absences will remain unexcused.

  13. Birthdays Students may bring party invitations for parties to be held off campus, but must invite everyone in the class or all boys/girls as appropriate. Invitations will only be accepted by the teacher on Mondays to be sent home in the Tuesday Folder. Your child’s birthday is acknowledged during our morning news broadcast, and teachers will acknowledge your child’s birthday in class. Students will be allowed to celebrate their birthday at the end of the school day, by providing store-bought cookies, donuts or cupcakes, only. No nuts please, due to allergies. A parent or guardian must bring them into the building and complete the appropriate paperwork. Please provide napkins. We respectfully request no cakes, drinks, balloons, flowers, stuffed animals, or goody bags. Cookie cakes are appropriate if a nutritional label is provided and it is precut before arriving at school.

  14. Accessing Online Textbooks To access online textbooks go to the link below and follow the instructions in this short video clip. You will need to know your child’s username and password. The username is your child’s lunch number their password is 123456.   15. Family Access • If you haven’t already signed up for Family Access, be sure and do so. You can get updates on grades, missing work and other important information. • To sign up for the first time, you need to bring your driver’s license to the front office and they will assist you. • If you signed up in previous years or with older children, you should still be able to access all of your students.

  16. Incomplete and Missing Work All graded work will need to be completed at school. In the event of an absence, student practice work may be sent home to work on. If students are unable to complete work in the given time frame, they may be allotted one extra week. At that time, the work will be collected and graded as is. We give students ample time to complete their graded work, however, in the event that a student needs additional time, Ms. Daniel and I have a 45 minute study hall each Friday for students who need extra time to complete their graded work.

  17. Dismissal and Severe Weather Days • Students should have a dismissal plan in place for every day. In the event of a change, we must be notified by the parents or the student will be sent home according to their regular dismissal plan. • Severe Weather- A severe weather dismissal will only be called in case of thunder or lightning. Rain alone is not cause for the severe weather dismissal to be called. In the event of an unforeseen heavy rain, students may be held for a few extra minutes while we wait for it to clear.

  18. Communication We will e-mail newsletters to parents each week. Please read for important information regarding, objectives, school sponsored events, field trips, and test dates. Email is the best way to reach us. If you want to reach use by phone, you can call at anytime. However, during school hours, the phone will not ring in our rooms, it will go straight to voice mail. We will return calls during our conference time or after school. On days that we have meetings or conferences though, we may not return calls right away. If you need to change your child’s transportation, please send a note, or email to your child’s homeroom teacher prior to 2:00pm. If your child's teacher does not respond, please call the front office to confirm the change, as the teacher may have been in a meeting during her planning period.

  19. Award’s Day • 2nd grade Awards -8:30 a.m. • Each student will receive a certificate with at least 2 awards

  20. Texas Reader’s Club(optional/completed at home) • Must complete 15 book reports to qualify for recognition & award • Fun & Creative ways to do book reports (poster, PowerPoint, diorama, mobile, board game, etc.) • 1 Award winner • 7 Fiction • 7 Non-Fiction (1 History, 1 Travel, 1 Biography, 2 Science, 2 Free Choice)

About Schoology Teaching and Learning is excited to announce the use of Schoology.  Schoology (pronounced /skoo-luh-jee/) was piloted on various campuses in 2017-18 and is now implemented district wide starting in the 2018 school year.  It offers teachers and students multiple avenues for collaboration, communication, assessment, submitting assignments and discussion boards.  For more on Schoology and the idea of a Learning Management System, please view the video on the next slide.
