  1. Fractures in Children Hi! This is Dr Abdul Salam, in this short read we are going to discuss a bit about child fractures. One Care Medical Center specializes in offering complex children fracture treatments in Coimbatore area. But let us first understand a bit about child fracture treatment in itself What are the most common type of fractures seen in children? Well its usually of the elbow and the wrist. Both of these bones commonly occur when a child falls on an arm that is stretched out. Sometimes wrist fractures can also occur by accidentally slamming the door on the hand. Healing of fractures - A child's bone is usually more soft and elastic, thus the bone of the child also heals much faster as compared to adults as such. Post a child fracture however, swelling and redness is still normally seen. It is highly recommended that the child be brought to the emergency room at the earliest as well.

  2. The good news is that, child fractures can heal really well without any residual deformity. One can use simple POPs and splints to immobilize the bone. If the bone however is not in alignment, the doctor should try to bring it back into normal alignment Major child fractures may not heal on its own and will require plates and screws. Healing time for child fractures is usually 1 month. Remember to keep a close watch on your loved ones. Even though child fractures may seem trivial, they definitely need proper evaluation Your orthopaedic doctor will usually first 1. Take a thorough medical history of the illness 2. Next he will take an X-Ray of the fracture to assess the site on injury, extent of break et cetera 3. Next a line of treatment will be decided As discussed earlier, the child's age, fracture location and clinical history will usually decide the outcome of choice. While minor fractures heal with simple POPS or splints major fractures where the bone is dislocated will need alignment combined with fixing either using plates or screws. In some instances, the fractures may be so severe that the bone gets shattered and penetrates through the skin, in these instances of course a multidisciplinary team based treatment approach to the problem is required. Specialized trauma centres usually have an excellent team of vascular surgeons, orthopaedic doctors and plastic surgeons to perform complicated procedures that involve major child fractures. I hope you enjoyed reading this short post on children fractures, do share this with your friends and keep watching this space for more interesting reads
