Spring Brook Watershed Team Oshkosh North High School 2012 Seasonal and Stream Comparisons Hypothesis Photos • Nitrate Nitrogen: • Runoff- our brook is surrounded by farm lands • farmlands=fertilized lands w/ chemicals • land may not absorb all chemicals, snow absorbs chemicals and when snow melt=run off into brook • Higher H2O levels in spring • Ammonia Nitrogen: • Ammonia generally comes from feces, urine • “Spring Shock” • Migration of birds in spring-birds fly home, more birds=more feces and urine • Fish spawning-more fish=more waste • Could be run-off • Farmers use manure to fertilize • pH: • According to EPA, pH should be around 6.5 • Spring brook is roughly 7.75 • Slightly basic • Seasonal and daily variation in photosynthesis • Photosynthesis-uses H+, decreasing concentration of H+ ions • -less H+ concentration= increase of pH
