  1. Motion under gravity Project of EDD-5161R Yue Ying Ho ( 98007310 ) Wong Bing Sze ( 98007710 )

  2. Introduction • I think you should have the experience of shooting a basketball. How can you describe the motion of the basketball ?

  3. Objectives • Represent the motion of a basketball by a x-t graph • Represent the motion of a basketball by a v-t graph • Understand the relation between x-t and v-t graph

  4. 0 Construction of a X-T Graph Height(x) /m When the position of the ball is recorded, a X-T graph is formed. X denotes displacement (height ). T denotes time taken. Time(t) /s

  5. X / m T / s 0 Characteristics of a X-T Graph xo X0is the maximum height reached by the ball. Maximum Height to is the total time taken for the ball to go and return. to What is the time required for the ball to reach the highest point ? Total Time

  6. X / m T / s 0 X-T graph is symmetric xo The time taken for the ball to reach the highest point should be to/2 Maximum Height to to/2

  7. 0 0 Construction of a V-T Graph Velocity(v) /ms -1 Displacement / m Time(t) /s Time / s V denotes velocity ( how fast ). T denotes time taken. When the velocity of the ball is recorded, a V-T graph is formed.

  8. 0 Velocity and v-t graph Velocity / ms -1 The ball is moving upward, the velocity is positive. Time / s The ball is moving downwardsand the velocity become negative The ball reaches the highest point, the instantaneous velocity iszero.

  9. 0 Speed and v-t graph Velocity / ms -1 The speed of the ball is reducing gradually. It is decelerating. Time / s The speed of the ball is increasinggradually. It is accelerating . The speed of the ball is zero. It is temporary at rest.

  10. Velocity / ms -1 Time / s 0 Areas in v-t graph Area A equals to the maximum height reached by the ball. A B Area B represents the distance traveled by the ball from the highest point back to the ground. Is there any relation between A and B ?

  11. Velocity / ms -1 Time / s 0 Area in V-T graph Area A and B are the SAME ! It is because the basketball travels the same distance up and down . B B B B A B B B

  12. Velocity / ms -1 Time / s 0 Slope in v-t graph What is the slope of this straight line ? vo The slope of the v-t graph is the acceleration of the basketball. to

  13. Velocity / ms -1 Time / s 0 Slope in v-t graph The slope of the v-t graph is : - vo / to = -g g is the gravitational acceleration and is approximately equal to 10 ms-2 vo to
