1. AP Lab 11: Animal BehaviorAssignment SheetBelow is a pic of sow bugs which are called for in the lab procedure. We are substituting meal worms.
2. Writing Up A Lab Always done in PEN
Always done on lined paper- if you’ve been using a lab book, you may continue it there, if not, loose leaf.
Let’s talk about setting up the lab based on your lab write up guide.
3. About this Experiment… This lab should have a problem that is to find whether your invertebrate organism of choice moves in an experimental setup by KINESIS or TAXIS
Taxis- direct movement towards or away in response to a stimulus
Kinesis- random movement in response to stimulus (unlike taxis- not directional)
4. Experimental Set-Up Ideas Wet vs. Dry areas
Light vs. Dark areas
…or anything your imagination decides!
5. Guidelines This is a formal lab write-up. Since it should all be in your own words, how you set up the experiment here is your focus.
You MUST have a diagram of your experiment set-up.
You MUST have a minimum of three trials
You MUST have a table
You MUST have a graph of some kind (bar, pie, or line)
Your hypothesis and conclusion should address whether your organisms move by kinesis OR taxis
6. Don’t forget (a)… CONTROL! Very important. Think of how you will set this up.
CONSTANTS! And be able to describe how you kept things constant in your experiment.
Enough organisms! The more you have, the more reliable your results have the potential to be. Minimum of 10.
7. For the Pre-Lab (your HW tonight) This is the part of the lab that you are able to write up without having done the lab. See Lab write-up guide for which sections this includes.
I will check off that you did this on lab day but do not yet look at content. It subtracts 5 points off your lab if you do not have it on lab day (tomorrow).
You will simply add new sections to it after doing the lab. The Pre-Lab keeps you from having to write up the whole lab in one night by dividing this up and it also makes sure you are aware of what you are doing.
8. To Be Ready for AP Lab 11 Quiz- See Calendar for date Lab quizzes are SHORT(10-15 questions that are multiple choice, T/F, or short answer) because USUALLY they are done on lab day right before the lab (not this one though- see calendar). Their objective is to measure your understanding of the major objectives of the lab.
TO BE PREPARED:
Do Lab Bench. Make sure you understand what is important for a well performed science experiment AND that you know the scientific method.
Read through the lab in your lab manual.
