Our goal for today: Learn to become an expert learner in Biology
Use Metacognition Strategies • Metacognition is the ability to: • Think about thinking • Be consciously aware of oneself as a problem solver • Monitor and control one’s mental processing • Be aware of the type of learning that you are doing

Bloom’s Example: Space 1) Remembering: List all the planets. Name all the things an astronaut needs for a space journey 2) Understanding: Make a model of all the planets in our solar system 3) Applying: What would you need to travel between planets? What instruments would make music in space? 4) Analyzing: Distinguish the atmospheres on Jupiter and Saturn and Mars 5) Evaluating: Choose a planet you would like to live on and explain why 6) Creating: A spaceship is out of control. Write a newspaper report about the incident.

Socrative Question Room XXXXXX Question 4 • What level of Bloom’s taxonomy did you need to get an A on a test in Biol 106? • Remembering • Understanding • Applying • Analyzing • Evaluating • Creating
Ok, so how do I move up the levels of Bloom’s taxonomy? Use the Study Cycle!
The Study Cycle 4Reflect Preview before class– Skim the chapter, note headings and boldface words, review summaries and chapter objectives, and come up with questions you’d like the lecture to answer for you. Preview Attendclass – GO TO CLASS! Answer and ask questions and take meaningful notes. Attend Review after class– As soon after class as possible, read notes, fill in gaps and note any questions. Review • Study – Repetition is the key. Ask questions ‘why’, ‘how’, and ‘what if’. • Intense Study Sessions* - 3-5 short study sessions per day • Weekend Review – Make connections from this week’s notes Study • Assess your Learning– Periodically perform reality checks • Am I using study methods that are effective? • Do I understand the material enough to teach it to others? Assess *Intense Study Sessions
Five Reasons Folks Will Make an A on quizzes: • 1. Did preview-review for every class • 2. Did a little of the homework at a time • 3. Used the book and did the suggested problems • 4. Made flashcards of the information to be memorized • 5. Practiced explaining the information to others

Concept #1 Concept #2 Compare and Contrast How are they similar? How are they different?
Effective Study Strategies • Start homework early--the day it’s assigned • Do not flip back to check your notes; work problems yourself! Check later • Make flashcards for things you need to memorize • Test understanding by explaining things out loud • Spend time with material every day • Aim for 100% mastery, not just what you need to get an A • Don’t give up too soon (<15 min.). Or spend too much time (>45 min.)
Get the Most from Tutorial Centers, Office Hours, and Study Groups • Try to understand the concept or work the problem by yourself first • Come prepared to ask questions • Explain the material to the tutor or instructor
What we know about learning • Active learning is more lasting than passive learning • -- Passive learning is an oxymoron* • Thinking about thinking is important • Metacognition** • The level at which learning occurs is important • Bloom’s Taxonomy***
Socrative Question Room XXXXXX Question 5 • Who do you think is primarily responsible • for student learning? • Student • Instructor • Institution

Growth Mindset • Anybody who is good at anything was once not very good at that thing • Every single person in this class CAN get an A. Now you know how. Do you choose to do so?
Take Home Message • Think about how you learn • Use the Study Cycle • You should do this in all your classes! • You don’t learn in class. You learn on your own. Class just gives you the raw materials for what to learn. • I have high expectations. Still…You CAN do this!
