Demography • Regulation on demographic statistics • Aim: completion of the harmonisation of population statistics (after adoption of Regulations on Migration Statistics and on Population and Housing Censuses) • Draft text based on a stakeholder analysis and an ex-ante evaluation • First discussion with Member States: WG 3-4 November • Life expectancy by socio-economic group • Aim: regular production of respective indicators • Proposal based on stakeholder analysis and national experiences • First discussions with Member States: TF 23-24 –September, WG 3-4 November • Regular data releases: • Latest release: “The EU-27 population continues to grow” based on first available demographic data

Population and Housing Censuses • Results of monitoring • No risk: BG, DK, ES, CY, LU, HU, MT, AT, PL, PT, SI, SK, UK, LI, CH, NO • Emerging risk: IE, EL, FR, LT, NL, FI, SE, IS • High risk: BE, CZ, EE, IT, LV • No reply: DE, RO • Main reasons for risks: • Budgetary constraints (CZ, EE, IE, EL, IT, LV, SE, IS) • Access to and quality of administrative registers (BE, SE) • Delays (CZ, EE, LV)

Population and Housing Censuses (contd.) • 1st Implementing Regulation: technical specifications and breakdowns • Comitology item on the agenda of the ESSC meeting of 2 October • If favourable opinion: adoption possible by end November • If unfavourable opinion: text referred to Council • 2nd Implementing Regulation: programme of statistical data and metadata • Launch of procedure dependent on adoption of 1st implementing Regulation • Estimated duration of the procedure: minimum of 6 months (including interservice consultation, translation into all Community languages, favourable opinion of ESSC, scrutiny of EP and Council

Population and Housing Censuses (contd.) • 3rd Implementing Regulation: quality reporting • Under preparation • 4th Implementing Regulation: data transmission format • To be prepared after adoption of 2nd implementing Regulation (if necessary) • Census Hub • Currently in pilot phase in DE, IE, IT, PT, SI • Results expected by end 2009 • GEOSTAT • Referencing census data according to geographical grids • Call for proposals launched - deadline: 25 September

Population Projections • EUROPOP2008 published in spring 2008 • Regional Projections to be released in autumn 2009 • Joint Eurostat / UNECE Work Session on Demographic Projections: Lisbon, 28-30 April 2010 • Call for papers open until 30 October 2009 • More information at www.unece.org/stats/documents/2010.04.projections.htm • EUROPOP2011 to be released in spring 2011

Migration Statistics - Regulation • Asylum statistics • Since the beginning of 2008 • Published regularly on New Cronos and in a series of quarterly Data in Focus publications • Enforcement statistics • First data collection in March 2009 • Publication on New Cronos expected before the end of the year • Residence permits statistics • First data collection in June 2009 • Publication on New Cronos in preparation • Implementing Regulation on statistical categories of reasons of permits currently under EP and Council scrutiny; adoption expected by November 2009 • Additional disaggregations: stakeholder needs and feasibility to be discussed in TF meeting 26-27 November 2009
