Taft Becomes President 27 • Roosevelt decided not to run again and picked his secretary of War Taft to run against Bryant. • Taft wins easily, but in shadow of Roosevelt • Payne- Aldrich Tariff compromise that upset most • Gifford Pinchot called for balanced conservation policy • Taft also moved away from conservationism another progressive agenda under Roosevelt
