  6. ATTENDANCE LAWS • State law requires that all students be in attendance in all courses at least 90% of the time school is in session in a semester.   • When student attendance falls below 90% state law requires that parents and students be notified in writing regardless of the reasons for the absences. • Students may not be awarded credit in courses where attendance is below 90% unless action is taken

  7. Students should attend school every day and avoid missing school for unexcused reasons • Parents must report student absences within 48 hours for consideration of excused absences.  After 48 hours, absences will be coded as unexcused and will not be reversed. • Ten unexcused absences will result in a referral to the county court for potential prosecution for failure to attend school.

  8. GPA Guidelines for Classes A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by adding high school grade points (awarded on the basis of the final numerical average at the end of each semester) and dividing by the number of semesters involved. Fall Semester GPA Based on Fall Semester Grade: Fall Semester Grade = 42.5% (1st 9-week Grade) + 42.5% (2nd 9-week Grade) + 15% (Midterm Exam) Spring Semester GPA Based on Spring Semester Grade: Spring Semester Grade = 42.5% (3rd 9-week Grade) + 42.5% (4th 9-week Grade) + 15% (Final Exam)

  11. Goals for….. Freshman Year WORK ON STUDY HABITS! • Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don't have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library. • Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult assignments first, so you don't have to face them at the end. • Even if you don't have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is part of your normal routine, you'll approach it with less dread. Also, you'll become a pro at using time productively.

  12. If you have a study period or a long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. We also have study hall during Advisory twice a week. • Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.

  13. Know how much weight each assignment or test carries, and use your time accordingly. • Keep your mind from wandering by taking notes, underlining sections, discussing topics with others or relating your homework to something you're studying in another class. • People process information in different ways. Some people like to draw pictures or charts to digest information, others prefer to read out loud or make detailed outlines. Try to find the methods that work best for you. Ask your teacher for recommendations if you're having trouble.

  14. GET INVOLVED! • Get involved in the school and/or community. Extracurricular activities, volunteering and community service can start now! (They can log their hours in Naviance). VISIT THE COLLEGE BOARD WEBSITE! Site Topics include: • Emails and texts with college info, advice and reminders • Planning for College • Parent Webinars • Learning about Financial Aid • Frequently Asked Questions

  15. Fast Facts from College Board…. Extracurricular activities include any activity your child’s involved in that isn’t directly related to their coursework. Colleges look at a student's activities for signs of leadership, initiative, a willingness to take risks, etc. Colleges also want to know about students' internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs. A student's level of involvement is more important than how many activities they participate in. Make sure your child doesn’t overextend themselves.
