  1. Acne Whiteheads-areknown as closedcomedone, they are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells, and have only a microscopic opening to the skin surface. *Since the air cannot reach the follicle, the material is not oxidized, and remains white. Blackheads- are known as open comedonesare follicles that have a wider than normal openingand are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. Whichgives the material in the follicle the typical black color.

  2. Skin Care • Once-a-day cleansing with a mild soap or facial scrub to aid in the removal of excess sebum and dead skin cells. • Acne is not caused by "dirty" skin, excessively scrubbing does not help and can even make the skin more irritated. • Oil Based make up should not be used since these can contribute to the buildup of oil in the follicles.

  3. For example: the lips may show cyanosis. Cyanosis can be evident at birth, as in a "blue baby" who has a heart malformation that permits blood that is not fully oxygenated to enter the arterial circulation. Cyanosis can also appear at any time later in life. Cyanosis *A bluish color of the skin and the mucous membranes due to insufficient oxygen in the blood.
