  2. GEOGRAPICAL LOCATION • Salem is one of the Famous District in TN for Yarn Dyed Product. • Salem is 340 kms from Chennai • 160 kms from Coimbatore • 220 kms from Bangalore • 340 Kms from Tuticorin Sea Port. • Well connected with Rail & Road from various part of the country.

  3. HISTORY • Started handloom production of dhoties & Sarees prior to 1950 • Started Powerloom production of dhoties & Sarees after 1950 • At present producing yarn dyed fabric, dhoties & Sarees of different designs • Producing yarn dyed fabric in shuttleless looms for RMG units

Types of Production & Price Range • Production per day in one loom 8 Dhoties or 5 sarees. • Production per day in one ordinary loom 40 mtrs Yarn dyed fabric. • Production per day in one shuttless loom 60 to 140 mts depending upon the design. • Job work per mtr for production of Yarn dyed Fabric Ranges from Rs. 15 to 20. • Dhoties , Sarees with a price range of Rs.130-400 per piece (Dhoti-3.5 mtrs & Sarees- 6.0 mtrs ) • Yarn dyed fabric with a price range of Rs.60-150 per mtr. With a brand name of Salem fabrics

  7. VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS • Cost of Production in Respect of Polyester/ cotton Dhoti: Warp: 60s Polyester/Viscose Blended Yarn Weft: 60s 100% Cotton combed Yarn. Reed X Pick : 82X72, Width : 132cm Price of Polyester Viscose blended yarn : Rs 146/Kg Price of 100% cotton combed yarn: Rs 142/kg Price of Boarder Zari: Rs 350/Kg ( 30 Days Credit) Price of Weft Zari : Rs 900/Kg (30 Days Credit) Cost of Production of One dhoti comes to Rs 130. Selling Price with 7 Days credit comes to Rs 140

Analysis of Business Operation • Old / Obsolete technology , very few units are having Shuttless Loom. • Under Utilization of Capacities due to lack of Orders & monopoly mechanization of the master weavers. • Catering mostly Cost base Market. • Many ordinary Powerloom units are having their loom sheds in their house itself. • Association is Ineffective. • Power Tariff upto 10 Hp capacity units is susidised powers & more than 10 Hp capacity is normal tariff as per TNEB Rules

Analysis of Business Operation Cont… • Most of the Units i.e 95% are engaged in Job Work only. • No diversification of the Product as they are producing as per raw materials & design given by Master Weavers. • All the 95% of the units arenot having marketing knowledge/ financial knowledge / costing of fabric calculation. • The advance loom owned by the units arenot properly maintained by the owner/ weavers of units due to lack of technological knowledge for advance looms.

WEAKNESS • Low level of Productivity due to inadequate training & lack of order. • No exposure of global market/ up country market. • Always depends upon Master Weavers. • Low access of testing, designing & technical services. • Low level of Modernization. • Higher Labour turn over. • Frequent absenteeism at work. • Lack of professional commitment.

WEAKNESS Cont… • Low level of Motivation. • Non availability of quality floor level technicians for repair/ maintenance of modern m/cs. • Inability of keeping production schedules. • Poor finishing, washing, dyeing & packing facilities. • Discharge of effluents from Dyeing & washing units without proper ETP. • Misuse of Resources & huge energy loss. • Lack of Co-operatives among the firm.

  16. VISION OF CLUSTER The brand name “ Salem Fabric” will be treated as world class apparel fabric in the global market in the RMG sector with a increases productivity of 20% as on March 2012
