  1. Scientists find more than 500 new Genes Linked to high blood pressure— Hypertension High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. This can be caused by a number of things, such as diet and lifestyle choices, a family history of high BP, genetics, etc. Lifestyle risk factors, which include obesity, overweight, smoking, alcohol and a lack of physical activity, stress are well-known. Now, a new study suggests that high blood pressure is also highly heritable through genetics. The study, led by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), identified more than 500 new gene regions that could be responsible for high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease. Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry preventive health programme that screened 22 million adults across 100 districts in Indian in 2017 found that one in every eight people in India above 30 years of age has high blood pressure. Hypertension is also found to be one of the leading causes of premature deaths in India. The World Health Organisation suggests that one in every three people in the US and one in four in the UK suffer from hypertension. For the current research, the team of researchers analyzed the DNA of more than one million people and found 535 new genetic loci linked with the condition. The findings showed that all of the genetic variants increase a person's risk of high blood pressure by 3.34 times. The study also revealed that people who were in the highest genetic risk group were 1.52 times more likely to suffer a related complication, such as a heart attack or stroke.
