  1. Mèxico 1860-1995

  2. 1860-Benito Juarez • Benito Juarez (pure blood Zapotec Indian) • Benito forced Santa Anna out of power • Juarez es el presidente • This creates chaos and then civil war (liberals vs conservatives).

  3. 1860-Benito Juarez • Conservatives sought foreign help from French (Napoleon) • Napoleon’s armies defeat Juarez’s Mexican Army. • Maximilian (Austria) was appointed emperor by Napoleon and was sent to restore order.

  4. 1867-Juarez Returns • Forces Maximilian & Europeans out of power. • This is Cinco de Mayo (The Battle of Puebla) • As president, he wants a modernized Mexico. • Created a new sense of Nationalism. • Juarez dies in 1872.

  5. 1876-Profirio Diaz • Diaz seizes power as president. • Establishes order & working gov’t. • Mexico prospers. • Becomes corrupt and is resented by the Mexicans.

  6. 1910 – Revolution!!! • Due to Diaz’s poor leadership, Diaz agrees to an election. • Francisco Madero runs. • Diaz rigs election. • Madero calls for revolt of people - Revolution!!!!!! • Diaz forced out of office & flees. • Golpe de Estado: People overthrowing a person of power.

  7. 1920 – Zapata & Villa • Zapata (general in the revolution) was originally allied with Madero. • Angry with government land laws & recruited angry citizens in the South. • Villa joined Zapata and organized local cowboys from the North who committed train robberies. • Both bandits who “stole from the rich & gave to the poor.” Fought for the people.

  9. 1921 – Time of Constant shift in Government Power • The government tries to modernize Mexico but, it’s too disorganized. • There’s too much poverty and instability. • Lot’s of debt due to the inconsistency.

  10. 1940 – Oil!!! • Oil is discovered & brings prosperity to country until the 1980’s. • In 1980, there is a decline in the world’s oil market. • This decline causes the Mexican economy to plunge again.

  11. 1985 – Terremoto!!! • September 1985 there is a terremoto (earthquake). • This causes additional economic setback. • This severely damage the capital of Mexico D.F. • Thousands of people were killed.

  12. 1995 – Peso Falls • In the early 90’s, the value of the Peso dropped significantly. • The Peso Nuevo was born.
