Past Simple Questions • To ask questions in the Present Simple, we use the auxiliary verb DO, in the form DO (I, you, we, they) or DOES (he/she/it) • Do you work here? • Does she live in Florianópolis? • To ask questions in the Past Simple, we use the past of the auxiliary verb DO, DID (for all persons) • DID you work YESTERDAY? • DID she live in Florianópolis IN 2010?

Pay attention!!! • In the affirmative, we add +ED/D to the verb • I workED YESTERDAY. • she liveD in Florianópolis IN 2010 • But in questions the MAIN VERB takes the base form: • DID you work YESTERDAY? • notDID you workED YESTERDAY? • DID she live in Florianópolis IN 2010? • notDID she liveD in Florianópolis IN 2010?   • Also, note that the PAST SIMPLE is always used with a time expression: “YESTERDAY”, “IN 2010”, etc.

Past Simple Short Answers • For short answers in the Present Simple, we use the auxiliary verb DO, in the form DO (I, you, we, they) or DOES (+NOT) (he/she/it) • Do you work here? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t. • Does she live in Florianópolis? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t. • For short answers in the Past Simple, we use the past of the auxiliary verb DO, DID + NOT(for all persons) • DID you work YESTERDAY? Yes, I DID. / No, I DIDN’T. • DID she live in Florianópolis IN 2010? Yes, she DID. / No, she DIDN’T.

Ask and answer these questions: • Student A: Did you work yesterday? • Student B: Did you work last Saturday? • Student A: Did you watch TV last night? • Student B: Did you watch TV last Sunday? • Student A: Did you cook yesterday? • Student B: Did you cook the day before yesterday? • Student A: Did you wash your car last week? • Student B: Did you wash the dishes last night

One student reads the sentence, the other puts it in the interrogative form: • Student A: She helped me yesterday. • Student B: He called last night. • Student A: We didn’t work last weekend. • Student B: I didn’t wash the car yesterday. • Student A: I watched TV last night. • Student B: I called my friends last weekend. • Student A: I didn’t study English on Saturday. • Student B: He didn’t jog on Sunday.

Past Simple Negative • To make negatives in the Present Simple, we use the auxiliary verb DO, in the form DON’T (I, you, we, they) or DOESN’T) (he/she/it) • You DON’T work. • She DOESN’T live in Florianópolis. • To make negatives in the Past Simple, we use the past of the auxiliary verb DO, DID+NOT = DIDN’T(for all persons) • You DIDN’T you work YESTERDAY. • She DIDN’T live in Florianópolis IN 2010.
