  5. Areas of Focus Kitsap Lake has adopted five focus areas including math, reading, writing, safety and relevance in learning.

  6. Focus One: Math Increasing math achievement for all; including African American, Low Income, and Special Education students

  7. KLE Improvement Strategies • KEMS Training and PLC work including: Math fact mastery, SOLVE strategies, hands-on math engagement and math vocabulary word walls • School Schedule reworked to provide specific grade level math intervention • Ascend/Team Software • Before School Math Support • Parents as Partners workshop series focused on math education

  8. Focus Two: Reading Increasing Reading Achievement for all; including African American, Low Income, and Special Education students

KLE Improvement Strategies • Writing/Reading Connection in each grade level, use high frequency words as spelling words, use writing to show what you know and created benchmark assessments for each trimester for each grade level • I-Learn project in fourth & fifth grades to help reading fluency & comprehension by use of I-pods to enhance curiosity • Reading blocks built into schedule to accommodate Core being taught to all with interventions added after core. Support consists of Phonics help, RAVE-O, Reading Mastery, Multiple meaning of words • Before school Reading Support • Reading vocabulary word walls • Parents As Partners focused on Reading help for your child

  10. Focus Three: Writing Increasing Writing Achievement for all; including African American, Low Income, and Special Education Students

KLE Improvement Strategies • Integration of writing into all school activities including note-taking and using writing to “Show what you know” • Writing in journals across grade levels culminating in a writing piece in each grade connected to Common Core Standard at each trimester • Greater focus on writing at each grade level integrated into math, science, social studies & Reading

  12. Focus Four: Making learning more meaningful and useful for students

KLE Improvement Strategies • Parents as Partners Workshop Series including topics Reading and Your Child Magic 1,2, 3 Behavior Plan, Math and Your child • Soaring Eagles, Eagle Employment & Peer Mediators are programs to enhance school relevance • PGP/PLC focused on Eric Jensen strategies to make learning relevant for students

KLE Improvement Strategies • Compassionate School Training for all staff • Teaching more sophisticated emotions in a systemic way • Restructure/Realign RTI system and PBIS system • Continuation of making KLE safer through safe pick-up and drop-off procedures and constant attention to Emergency Preparedness
