  2. Breathing • Is the movement of air into and out of the lungs • Allows your respiratory system to take in oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide

  3. Taking in Oxygen • Your body needs oxygen for cellular respiration

  4. Eliminating Carbon Dioxide • Respiratory system removes CO2 waste gases from the body

  5. Respiratory Organs • Pharynx • Larynx and trachea • Bronchi and lungs • Alveoli

  6. pharynx • A tubelike passageway at the top of the throat that receives air, food, and liquids from the mouth and nose. • Epiglottis – a flap of tissue at the lower end of the pharynx. It stops food and liquids from entering your lungs.

  7. Larynx and trachea • Larnyx is a triangle-shaped on which air passes over also called voice box • THEN…………. • Air enters the trachea

  8. Bronchi • Trachea branches into 2 narrow tubes called the bronchi that leads into the lungs

  9. Lungs • Major organs of the respiratory system • Bronchi branch into smaller and narrower tubes called bronchioles

  10. Alveoli • Bronchioles end in microscopic sacs called aveoli • This is where gas exchange occurs • Gas exchange- oxygen from the air you breathe moves into the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood goes into the aveoli

  11. Structure of aveoli • Walls of aveoli are one cell thick • Blood vessels cover the outside of the aveoli

  12. How do you breathe? • When high levels of CO2 build up in your blood it signals your nervous system to exhale. Then you inhale. • Your diaphragm is a large muscle below your lungs that contracts and relaxes. That’s how the air moves in and out of your lungs. It simply a change in air pressure!
