  2. Run-ons and Comma Splices • Occur when there is a close relationship between two sentences.

  3. Run-ons • A run-on is two simple sentences incorrectly joined with no coordinating conjunction(FANBOYS) and no comma. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday he spends hours riding his bicycle.

  4. Comma Splices • A comma splice is two simple sentences incorrectly joined with a comma but no coordinating conjunction. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday, he spends hours riding his bicycle.

  5. Two ways to fix these errors • Add (or keep) the comma and add a coordinating conjunction. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday, so he spends hours riding his bicycle. • Separate the sentences with a period. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday. He spends hours riding his bicycle.

  6. Practice 15- Identify if the sentence is correct, if not, fix the sentence. • Salespeople are usually very outgoing, they like to talk with people. • Coaches must be enthusiastic and know how to motivate athletes. • News reporters need to work long hours under difficult conditions, the job can be well paid and full of excitement. • Police officers are very dedicated to their jobs, but their lives are often in danger. • Vets need to love animals, they must have excellent people skills, too. • Successful politicians are usually very charismatic, voters need to trust them.

  7. Fragments • A fragment means part of something. A sentence fragment means that it is not a complete sentence. • Example: • Before the test began. • As soon as you get home.

  8. How to fix • You need to add an independent clause either before or after the fragment. • Example: The teacher passed out the paper before the test began. • Before the test began, the teacher passed out the paper.

  9. Practice 10 • Identify and correct the sentence fragments • Every night, after I finish my homework. • As soon as we heard the crash. • The bicycle racers stopped to rest before they started up the mountain. • Wait until you hear the bell. • Whenever my children have a school holiday. • I work at night while my husband stays home with the children.
