    3. 3 Airportal Project Develop concepts, capabilities, and technologies that address Airport system constraints, including safety and environmental, to the NextGen capacity goals. Address factors leading to: Airport operations that achieve maximum efficiency in the use of gates, taxiways, runways, approach airspace. Metroplex & regional operations where maximum system efficiency is achieved in the use of multiple-airport systems.

    4. 4 Project Organization

    5. 5 Airportal Domains

    6. 6 Airportal Opportunities Total Throughput = ?(AP) * (AC/HR per AP) * ((HR/DAY)*(DAYS))

    7. 7 Airportal Project Research Focus Area Safe and Efficient Surface Operations (SESO)

    8. 8 Airportal Project Research Focus Area Coordinated Arrival/Departure Operations (CADOM) Challenges & Opportunities Runway capacity is a major constraint to system capacity (base and weather-impacted) Capacity of individual runways Interactions between converging and parallel runways Number of runways available Runway operations must be integrated with surface operations and terminal/en route Constraints vary by airport Expected Impact or End Result A suite of concepts and technologies that can be tailored to specific airports Alternative concepts for improving the capacity and efficiency of the runway complex at the single-airport level – leveraging NextGen capabilities Foundational Research Development of alternative operational concepts at the airport level for single and multiple runways Super density operations (conflict detection and alerting, separation assurance, wake vortex behavior and prediction) Environmental impact of alternative operational concepts Integration of runway and surface operations

    9. 9 Airportal Project Research Focus Area Airportal Transition and Integration Management (ATIM)

    10. 10 Innovation Approach Assertion: Many concepts for ATM and aircraft operational improvements have been formulated. Some of these are the subject of detailed investigation (WakeVAS, TACEC,…..) The JPDO-articulated NextGen reopens the design space (RNP, 4D Trajectory-Based Operations, ……) Need: Revisit demand, constraints, opportunities, and concept identification in the NextGen context. Airportal Project strives to reopen this space during it’s first year, in collaboration with JPDO, FAA, and the International community. Project reference material (technical approach, milestones) is available on-line at: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/aero/nra_pdf/airportal_project_c1.pdf

    11. 11 Foundational NRA Research NASA Research Announcements are the primary acquisition mechanism for external research Surface management-related topics recently awarded: Surface Traffic Optimization in the Presence of Uncertainties Develop system architecture and algorithms to generate optimized solutions for super-density surface traffic in the presence of uncertainties Modeling of Environmental Constraints in Surface Traffic Optimization To develop techniques to ensure that all relevant environmental constraints are considered in the surface traffic optimization process Constraints to Achieving Airportal Capacity Requirements (nearing award) Identify and rank the key factors limiting achievement of capacity goals of NextGen; identify capabilities required, and gaps in available tools, for conducting system-level trade and benefit studies. Made font-sizing more consistentMade font-sizing more consistent

    12. 12 A Request Airportal surface management plans focus on JPDO NextGen 4D trajectory concepts, optimization of surface schedules and routes, low-visibility taxi, and conflict detection & resolution. Request your feedback this week: Opportunity space we have not considered? Communities of interest we have not engaged? Challenges we have not considered? Gaps or duplication of efforts? Opportunities to collaborate or coordinate?
