  3. A. European trends • Deregulation • Decentralisation • Greater autonomy of schools • School as part of society • More influence of groups in society (labour market, higher education, interest groups)

Trends in schools • Modern ideas about learning (learn how to learn rather than knowledge reproduction, critical reflection, problem solving, etc) • New teaching methods (ICT, group assignments, project work, reporting rather than reproduction • Schools as learning organisations (not only pupils learn, but also staff and organisation) • Greater innovation capacity of schools

The modern school leader (1) • Has knowledge about modern learning and teaching • Develops a shared vision on education and can implement this in concrete actions • Can change the organisation culture into a learning organisation with innovate, reflective teachers • Know to organise teachers, to optimise the school organisation

  6. The modern school leader (2) • Helps the staff to professionalize • Can find resources and set financial priorities to realise the shared vision • Knows to commit parents, community, labour market organisations, municipalities, etc.

Training methods • What did you learn last week? • How did you learn? • Management training is not tell and sell • Adults learn by doing: having real problems in every day life, reflecting on possible causes and attractive solution and reflecting on this. • Adults use a learning cycle like in problem solving: experience a problem, searching for causes, choosing a possible solution and trying whether it works (cycle starts again)
