Scientific landscape in Croatia (1) • less than 0.1 percent of world population (4.4 milion) • 9000HE teaching staff and researchers • six universities with 85 faculties, art academies, colleges of higher education, university departments and university studies • five polytechnics and six independent public higher education colleges • 27 research institutes

  3. Science in Croatia • financed through 2000 research projects governed bythree-year contracts • 16000 publicationsannualy (in national and international journals, books, conference proceedings, thesis, technical reports, patents etc.)

  4. What have we done in Croatia? • two key players

  5. The ever changing user • scientists, teachers and students as users/creators present new challenges! • librarians should help users to create (publish), organize and store work which is important for them and/or which is relevant for research and education • there are thousands of content producers, "publishing" their content without much care given toward bibliographic control, human-computer interface etc.

  6. Scientist as data provider - advantages • there is strong motivation to supply the data about their work • they can provide most accurate data • they can provide most current data • the data have “personal” touch

  7. Scientist as data provider - disadvantages • the data must be monitored and corrected • vanity • spent time (but also for other international repositories and archives)

  8. Librarians - two main directions • Organisation of (available) information resources for scientists to support their research and their teaching activities • Organisation of (not existing) information about Croatian science

Scope • an entry point to a world of resources, designed to save the user time, to provide relevant resources, and to encourage maximum use of acquired resources. • developing a network environment and services available to users at the point in their research or learning activity • Croatian Scientific Portal is supported by Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports (MSES)

Croatian Scientific Bibliography CROSBI • more then 179868 records in CROSBI (4000+ full-text) • Strorage/archival for all kind of documents (repository function) • a current and comprehensive information about • scientific output in Croatia • ongoing research projects supported by the Croatian MSES • publications by specific subject fields • current bibliography on institutional, individual or research project level • reports to be used for different purposes

Importance • there are 37,830,602 journal articles indexed in WoS database (on 30 Oct 2007) • (2006 - from USA 100,000 – exactly! ) • 2006 - from Croatia - 2,371 (at least one author from Croatia) • there are 16,759 items published in 2006 and indexed in CROSBI, 5564 are journal articles • it’s important to make them more visible!

Who’s Who in Science in Croatia • collects data about scientists • comprehensive information including biography, bibliography (from CROSBI), education, employment, advancements, awards, working experience, memberships, research interests, expertise, activities (intramural and extramural), and other skills, hobbies, interests... • CV on demand • Administrative interface: scientist and librarians as data providers • User interface: searching and browsing possibilities • scientists in Croatia, as Croatian scientists from abroad • increased visibility of Croatian scientists and improved communication between them • improved communication with public –promotion.

Croatian journals • published by scientific societies and academic institutions fighting for budgets • edited by small teams of scientists that voluntarily take care of the entire editorial work, including peer review, proof reading, printing preparation, distribution policies, etc. • poor distribution • yearly struggle for public funds • according Klarin, Pigac 2001, only 8 (eight) Croatian scholarly journals were published on the Web

HRČAK • central OAI portal for Croatian scholarly journals • tool for the publishers – simple and cheap way to publish electronic version of the journal • users – easy access, rich search and browse possibilities • authors – better visibility, higher impact; • Administrative interface: editors • User interface: browsing according subject field, simple and advance search, quick access to the full-text; • OAI – MHP protocol – data exchange;

Promotion of the open access in Croatia • support for institutional repositories which are OAI compliantforevery research or HE institution • promotion of the open access initiative on different levels • co-operation with institutional and other repositories and archives like OAISTER, DOAJ,etc.

  22. present work • initiate the network of institutional repositories • co-operation of institutions, libraries, government and CARNet will be needed • add OAI functionality to CROSBI • foster the exchange and reuse of metadata • CROSBI, inst. repositories, HRČAK, libraries’ OPACs, other information service providers

Future plans • improved interoperability (standards!) • improved functionalities • improved normative control • single entry and access point – different purposes • harvest the data from available resources (input) • provide more data for harvesting • motivation – feedback • more subject oriented approach • Ask the scientist! • disscussion forums – make them alive • improved accessibility – improved visibility – higher impact
