    1. Metaphor and Simile • We are going to start reading poetry tomorrow and I want to make sure I get the major literary devices in before we start • So far, we have learned, TONE-MOOD-IMAGERY • Today we are going to learn METAPHOR and SIMILE

    2. Metaphor and Simile • Many writers use metaphor and simile to create EVEN MORE imagery in their writing

    3. Metaphor • Metaphor • A comparison between two unrelated things usually using IS or ARE or A.

    4. Metaphor • A comparison between two unlike things usually using IS or ARE or A. • You are my sunshine my only sunshine. • Are you REALLY the SUN? No. But you make me happy. You bring me brightness. • YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE is a metaphor.

    5. Metaphor • Comparison between two unlike things usually using IS or ARE or A. • She has a heart of gold. • Can her heart really be made of gold? NO. But she is very kind. • She has a heart of gold is a metaphor.

    6. Metaphor • Comparison of two unlike things usually using IS or ARE or A. • I have a broken heart. • Can my heart really be PHYSICALLY broken? NO. But my heart is hurting emotionally. • I have a broken heart is a metaphor.

    7. Simile • Comparison between two things USING LIKE or AS.

    8. Simile • Comparison between two unlike things USING like or AS • She is as beautiful as a rose. • He is as tall as a tree. • It is as hot as the sun.

    9. Simile • Comparison between two unlike things USING LIKE or AS. • Life is like a box of chocolates. • We are like two peas in a pod. • Her smile is like a bright summer day.
