  1. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOLT AND A MACHINE SCREW

  2. Overview A bolt is simply a hook or piece of material that screws into an object. It can attach hardware, such as nuts and bolts, to one another. You must always understand the difference to help with the screw machining process. When you see a bolt, it's probably what's called a machine screw or a twist-on fastener. But what's the difference between a bolt and a machine screw?

  3. Materials A bolt is a threaded metal rod with a head on one end and a shank on the other. The head is usually broader than the shank and has two flats that fit into corresponding slots in a nut or screw. A machine screw is also made of metal but doesn't have a head. Instead, it has a cylindrical shank slightly tapered at the top. The shank fits into a hole in an object, and the top of the screw is covered by a washer that seats against the object's surface.

  4. Size A bolt has a head that is either a round or hexagonal shape, while a machine screw has a head that is usually octagonal. Machine screws are used where bolts would not fit, such as inside walls or under the surface of the plastic.

  5. Design Bolts use a head and shaft that are packed together, while screws have separate heads and shafts. Bolts also have a longer thread length than screws, which allows them to hold more weight before they strip. Machine screws have shorter threads, which makes them better for use in delicate applications. Finally, bolts are often coated with an anti-seize compound to help prevent binding and corrosion.
