  2. Page One • Crater – hollow area or pit in the ground. These are usually made by meteoroids. Same – same kind of rocks Close in space Different Smaller than earth No air or atmosphere No water Hot enough to boil water (day) Colder than anywhere on earth (night)

  3. Page two • Revolution – when one object travels around another • Orbit the path a revolving object takes. Earth’s orbit is like an eclipse • 23.5 degrees • The Earth’s tilted axis and revolution cause the seasons

  4. Page 3 • Fossil fuels- formed over millions of years ago from the remains of ancient plants and animals. These include coal, oil, and natural gas. • Consumer – something that does not make it’s own food. They must eat plants or other animals for food. • Producer – something that can make food through photosynthesis.

  5. Rise and fall of the ocean- pull, Earth, Moon- when the sun and the moon are lined up with the Earth. - when the sun and the moon are NOT lined up with the Earth.

  6. Eclipses • Lunar Eclipse: When the Earth Casts a shadow on the Moon. This happens when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon. • Solar Eclipse: The Moon Casts a shadow on the Earth. This only happens during a new Moon.

  7. The Earth’s Rotation • Rotation – the act of spinning • Axis- a real or imaginary line that an object spins around. • As the Earth Rotates only one side faces the Sun. On this side of the Earth it is day on the other side it is night. • A Shadow forms when light is blocked

  8. The Earth and the Sun • Star – sphere of hot gases that gives off light and heat. • The sun is the closest star to the Earth • Similarities: the sun is made of layers, • Differences- outermost layers are the hottest, releases energy into space. The center is the source of all it’s energy.

  9. Our Solar System • Solar System: the Sun and all the objects in orbit around it. • Planets – round objects in space that are satellites of the Sun. • Gravity – force of attraction between all objects • Sun

  10. Inner and Outer • Sim – rocky, mostly made of rock, solid core made of iron • Dif- gas giants, huge, mostly made of gases, seem to not have solid surfaces, mostly made up of hydrogen and helium, may have ice and rock at the core, ring system, many moons

  11. What else • Comet – mostly ice mixed with rocks and dust, moves in long narrow orbit • Asteroid – large chunks of rock or metal in space • Meteor – pieces of asteroid that make it into the earths atmosphere. These look like shooting stars • Meteorite – when a meteor reaches the earth’s surface it becomes a meteorite.
