Machine Safety

2. General Safety Requirements(For all machines) • Keep work area clean, organized, and well-lighted • Immediately clean up spills • Always use appropriate safety gear • Dress appropriately for lab work • NEVER use equipment when under the influence of drugs/alcohol • Stay alert. Pay close attention when using machinery at all times • Keep all guards operational and in place at all times • Ensure that work piece is free from nuts, staples, or other objects that could become projectiles • Follow guidelines for safe use of each individual machine at all times • Consult manual when performing service or maintenance on machines • Do not use machines for jobs for which they were not intended • Keep children and pets away from work areas.

3. Housekeeping • Materials including scrap and debris should be contained to prevent objects from falling, becoming projectiles, or creating a dusty atmosphere • Floor of the work area is free from spills or accumulation of debris that could constitute a slipping or tripping accident • Storage area is free of accumulation of materials that constitute hazards from fire, fumes, or pest infestation • An unobstructed 3 foot aisle is maintained between machines

4. Safety gear • Eye protection is worn at all times. • Ear plugs or other hearing protection can be worn while loud machinery or air compressor is in use. • Heavy duty gloves can be worn when working with belt sander or grinder. • Protective sleeves and heat-resistant gloves are worn when working with the ovens. • Closed toe shoes, preferable leather with slip-resistant soles, are worn in lab areas. • Long sleeves, long pants, and lab coats can be worn to protect exposed skin from dust.

5. Clothing • Loose clothing can NOT be worn while operating machinery or working near machinery. This includes baggy clothing, neckties, drawstrings, hoods, etc. • Long sleeves must be rolled up tightly above the elbows. • Loose neck wear and jewelry is to be taken off while operating machinery or working near machinery. • Long or loose hair must be contained in a cap or scarf. • Closed toe shoes, preferable leather with slip-resistant soles, must be worn in lab areas.

6. Operation and Maintenance • Make sure the power is switched to “off” before plugging machinery to the wall. • Keep all guards operational and in place at all times. • Check for damaged parts and replace worn/damaged parts with identical replacement parts immediately. • Avoid overreaching. Maintain stability and balance at all times. • Never walk away from a spinning or running machine until it stops completely. • Do NOT use extension cords as a permanent power source. • Do NOT locate machinery so that the operator must stand in an aisle or high traffic area. • Ensure that machinery is installed to prevent unintentional tipping or movement. • Always refer to machine’s manual when servicing or ordering parts.

7. Band Saw Safety • Remove all adjusting wrenches from the band saw before turning it on. • Before using, ensure that the band saw blade is not bent or cracked. • Keep work piece flat and secure on the table. • Hands should not be in the same plane as the saw blade. Keep hands to the side of the stock, at least a few inches away from the blade.

8. Band Saw Safety • Do not force material into the blade saw while cutting. Apply moderate pressure, allowing the saw blade to cut without being forced. • Never attempt to remove debris stuck in moving parts until machine is turned off and unplugged. • Never back work piece away from the blade if it becomes bound or stuck. • During use the saw blade will become hot. Allow blade to cool before touching. • Keep hands and fingers away from band saw blade during use. • Always disconnect the band saw from its power source before performing service.

9. Bench Grinder Safety • Replace cracked, broken, or excessively worn grinding wheel immediately. • Always remove all adjustment keys and wrenches from the bench grinder before starting. • Wear heavy-duty work gloves and other necessary safety gear while operating the grinder. • Stand to one side when turning the power on. Do not use a wheel that vibrates. • Keep fingers and hands as far away from rotating grinding wheel as possible.

10. Bench Grinder Safety • Keep a firm grip on the work piece with both hands. • Bring the work piece into contact with the wheel slowly and smoothly. • Move the work piece back and forth across the face of the wheel only. This prevents ruts or grooves from forming. • Handle object being ground with care, since it will become hot during grinding. • Always disconnect the grinder from its power source before servicing. Do not carry or pull the grinder by its power cord.

11. Drum Sander • Keep a firm grip on the work piece with both hands. • Allow sander to reach full speed before engaging the work piece • Bring the work piece into contact with the wheel slowly and smoothly. • Move the work piece back and forth across the face of the sander only. This prevents ruts or grooves from forming. • Do not place hands near sander during operation. Never put hands or fingers in between sander and work piece. • Handle object being sanded with care, since it will become hot during grinding.

12. Drum Sander • Do not use the sander as a replacement for a band saw or other cutting tool. It is designed for finish work only. • Replace sanding sleeves when worn or torn. • Always disconnect the sander from its power source before servicing.

13. Trautman Carver • Use only recommended, properly installed accessories • Keep hands and loose clothing away from rotating tool and shaft • Keep a firm grip on stock with both hands. • Avoid placing excess pressure on the carver tool or shaft.

14. Two Wheel Grinder (Big Blue) • Do not use abrasive belts that are excessively worn. • Use of leather gloves may be effective in protecting hands and fingers. • Stand to one side when turning the power on. Do not use a wheel that vibrates. • Allow belt to reach full speed before using. • Keep body parts and loose clothing away from moving parts. • Hold work pieces firmly in both hands.

15. Two Wheel Grinder (Big Blue) • Never use unnecessary pressure on the stock piece or tool. • Bring the work piece into contact with the wheel slowly and smoothly. • Move the work piece back and forth across the face of the wheel only. This prevents ruts or grooves from forming. • Handle object being ground with care, since it will become hot during grinding. • Always turn off and unplug equipment before performing any adjustments or service.

16. Drill Press Safety • Secure work piece to the table. Do NOT try to hand-hold the work piece. • Keep clothing and hands away from rotating drill bit. • Work pieces and drill bit can become hot due to friction. Be careful handling after use. • Clear debris and scraps after use.

17. 12 Ton Shop Press • Avoid moving parts during operation. Keep hands and fingers away from all moving parts. • Do not compress springs. • Do not press items that could disengage and cause a potential hazard. • Do not operate jack beyond rated capacity.
