What is Islam and Halaal ISLAM • Difference between Muslim and Indian – latter is a race. • 1.8 billion worldwide (24% of world population) • Adherence to halaal food, regular prayers, charity, pilgrimage, fasting • Language: English is usually well understood and conversed in. Also: • Indian Muslims speak one of the Indian languages as mother tongue • Arab Muslim speaks the Arab language as mother tongue. • Clothing: • Typical Arab man: Loose, ankle length white cotton robe common • Typical Arab woman: Loose-fitting cloak with a hijab (scarf covering the head). Some women opt to wear a face veil as well. • Some Muslim travellers prefer home cuisine (Indian, Arabic, Lebanese, etc) on holiday while others are keen to embrace more cosmopolitan or local cuisine. • The first Muslims that arrived in the Cape Colony, came as political exiles

What is Islam and Halaal HALAAL HALAAL FOOD • Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted • The opposite of halal is haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. • Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life, not just food. • Meat derived from animals slaughtered in adherence to defined protocol. • Free from prohibited substances (pork, etc) or contaminants • No alcohol, pork • Avoid contamination – preparation, utensils, kitchen, storage, etc HALAAL TOURISM • Strictly Halaal (separate men and women facilities, etc) is NOT big demand • Halaal-suitable is the need • ASSUREDhalaal food (not just the food, but utensils, preparation area, etc) • Easy prayer facility, • Suitable ablution facilities • Prayer and ablution facilities are NOT extreme, can be easily accommodated • Breakfast is low-hanging fruit, can easily be done • Emphasis is on family trips and family-friendly destinations!

NOT ANY MORE! • Demand is worldwide, particularly those from wealthy Gulf Arab states. • Global Muslim population to grow to 31% of total Global population by 2060 • Demographics of Muslim traveller skewed towards millennials – modern, fun-loving, adventure • Muslims from the Gulf states have high-spending power! “Halaal travel contributed $1,5 trillion (R20,81 trillion at $1/R13,87) in 2015 with the sector growing at a rate of 9%.
