  5. Manipulating the UCN spectrum for nEDM: B0 ≈ 1.5 T RF frequency ≈ 40 MHz to do: - building a spinflipper (birdcage resonator,…..?) - Ordering superconducting magnet (length min. 600 mm, warm bore of 300 mm) 5 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  6. Inside the EDM UCN switch UCN bend sections UCN guides Polarisation foil in front of the detector 6 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  7. UCN guides • New sputtering facility for UCN guides: • Coatings of NiMo,Cu, Ti, supermirrors… inside tubes • max. guide length 1.8 m • inner diameters from 50 to 150 mm 3.6m long vacuum chamber will arrive in October Transport system is ready 7 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  8. UCN guides Transmission was measured to be 97.6% per meter (similar to replica!) 8 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  9. UCN bendsections (1-3) NiMo coated glass bends (300,450) (4) Stainless steel 450 selfmade bend sections: 92% transmission 9 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  10. UCN guides Supermirror with m = 1.5 (360 neV): 15 double layers of NiMo and Ti Bild VF = 360 neV measured What storage times can be expected? We will hopefully investigate this next year at ILL 10 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  11. UCN Switch Design for new switch will be similar (known technique) 11 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  12. Development of UCN polarizers Sputtering facility for Planar substrates : Substrat size : 700 x 300 mm² 3 magnetrons working in DC, RF or pulsed DC mode Coating homogeneity < 0.5% Bild große anlage - supermirrors - polarizers - further neutron optics - …. 12 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  13. Development of UCN polarizers Polarisation with single iron layers on Al - foils 96.0+/- 2.5% (magnetisation field 10mT!) 13 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  14. Development of UCN polarizers Magnetisation field 10mT 150nm thick iron layer -> high transmission Properties of the iron layer strongly depend on the production parameters 14 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  15. A UCN superpolarizer 99.5 +/- 1.0% 10 double layers Fe/Si on Si-wafer or Al-foil 15 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  16. Spin Gymnastics Mu-metal shield solenoid SC & SF Cosine coil Spin transport system is under preperation Should be tested at beginning of 2013 Cascade-U detector 16 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012

  17. Outlook • Coating techniques and know-how exists • UCN guides can be produced quite soon in new facility • UCN polarizer foils can be produced • Development of a UCN detector for simultaneous spin detection in collaboration with Heidelberg • Design of a working UCN switch exists and will be adapted • UCN-shutter and -spin transport design is on the way • We have to take care about the storage cells 17 T.Lauer – EDM workshop Oak Ridge Oct.2012
