  3. The Tower of London was founded in the 11th century by Williamthe Conqueror. The ravens whose forefathers used to find food in the Tower, still live here as part of history. There is a legend that if the ravens disappear the Tower will fall. That is why the birds are carefully guarded. The Tower itself is guarded by the “beefeaters”. Their uniform is as it used to be in Tudors times(1485 – 1603). St.Paul’s Cathedral is the work of thе famous architect SirChristopherWren.Work on Wren’s masterpiece began in 1675 after the great Fire of London of 1666. For 35 years the building of St. Paul’s Cathedral went on, and Wren was an old man ( about 80) before it was finished. Westminster Abbey is a fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. In the eighth century it was a monastery – West Minster. After the time of William the Conqueror it was the crowning place of the kings and queens of England. Many English monarchs, statesmen, scientists, musicians and writers are buried here, as,for example, Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling.

  4. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon not far from London. At the age of 21 William left Stratford for London to join a company of actors. He was a very good actor and an excellent playwright. William Shakespeare lived and worked in London for 25 years. By the end of the 16th century William Shakespeare and his friends had enough money to build their own theatre – the Globe.Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 2 long poems and a sonnet cycle. Horatio Nelson was born in 1758 in the family of a priest. In the war against France in 1793 he was the most courageous and talented captain of the English fleet. During his attacks he lost his right eye(at the battle of Calvee) and his right hand was hurt at the battle of Santa – Crouse. He was wounded at the battle of Trafalgar and died there.Nowadays there is Nelson column on Trafalgar Square in London, where he was buried in 1805. Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born in 1984. He has always been known as Prince Harry and a fun-loving boy. He is dubbed the Happy Prince. His mother, Princess Diana, wanted her two sons to enjoy a 'normal' lifestyle, and they often visited parks, McDonald's restaurants or cinema.Harry attended the same schools as William . Prince Harry plays rugby, football and cricket, enjoys swimming and skiing .William's role as the future king is clear, he is always aware of his position. Harry is much more relaxed, showing his feelings and saying what he thinks. He seems to enjoy his second son's status.
