  1. Visualization –I see it my way IIAction without Interaction Visualization –I see it my way IIAction without Interaction Eduard Gröller Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms Vienna University of Technology

  2. Challenges in Visualization • Novel Imaging Modalities • From Data Fusion to Visual Fusion • Visual Computing • Illustrative Visualization • Visualization Yes ! – Interaction No ? • Interaction Yes ! – BUT User centric ! Eduard Gröller

  3. Visualization Yes ! – Interaction No ? • Problems • Interaction is very time-consuming • Interaction prevents comparisons • Interaction hampers reporting • Challenges • Provide standardized views • Algorithms highly parameterized – provide sensible default settings • Support automatic parameter tuning • Provide navigational aids • Examples • Automatic view point selection • Focus of attention • Automatic light placement (inconsistent lighting) • Automatic reporting • Dynamic poster - automatic storytelling Eduard Gröller

  4. Importance-Driven Focus of Attention (1) • Guided navigation between characteristic views [Viola et al. 2006] Eduard Gröller Eduard Gröller, Ivan Viola

  5. Importance-Driven Focus of Attention (2) Ivan Viola Eduard Gröller

  6. Context-Preserving Rendering (1) [Bruckner et al. 2006] Integrate various focus+context approaches with only few parameters S. Bruckner and E. Gröller Eduard Gröller

  7. Context-Preserving Rendering (2) S. Bruckner and E. Gröller Eduard Gröller

  8. Provide the user with the flexibility he/she can cope with – avoid the terror of unconstrained liberty Visualization Yes ! – Interaction No ? • Problems • Interaction is very time-consuming • Interaction prevents comparisons • Interaction hampers reporting • Challenges • Provide standardized views • Algorithms highly parameterized – provide sensible default settings • Support automatic parameter tuning • Provide navigational aids • Examples • Automatic view point selection • Focus of attention • Automatic light placement (inconsistent lighting) • Automatic reporting • Dynamice poster - automatic storytelling Eduard Gröller

  9. Challenges in Visualization • Novel Imaging Modalities • From Data Fusion to Visual Fusion • Visual Computing • Illustrative Visualization • Visualization Yes ! – Interaction No ? • Interaction Yes ! – BUT User centric ! Eduard Gröller

  10. Interaction Yes ! – BUT User Centric ! • Problems • Medical doctors do not (want to) know transfer functions • Complex 3D interaction is complex • Challenges • Include user model (novice, experienced, expert) • Include motifs • Include user preferences • 2D+ navigation (instead of 3D navigation) • Examples • Semantic layers for illustrative volume rendering • Knowledge-based navigation Eduard Gröller

  11. Semantic Layers for Illustrative Volume Rendering (1) • Mapping volumetric attributes to visual styles • Use natural language of domain expert (rules) • Rules evaluated with fuzzy logic arithmetics [Rautek et al. 2007] Eduard Gröller

  12. Semantic Layers for Illustrative Volume Rendering (2) Video Eduard Gröller

  13. Long term goal: Interaction at sub-pick resolution Knowledge-Based Navigation (1) • Interaction with 2D slices • Automatic generation of expressive 3D views Video Eduard Gröller

  14. Challenges in Visualization • Novel Imaging Modalities • From Data Fusion to Visual Fusion • Visual Computing • Illustrative Visualization • Visualization Yes ! – Interaction No ? • Interaction Yes ! – BUT User centric ! Eduard Gröller

  15. The End is here The End is near .... Visualization – I see it my way IIIAction without Interaction Visualization – I see it my way IIITermination of the Viewer Coming soon Questions, comments? We take the viewer out of the visualization loop – and we mean it !! Eduard Gröller

  17. Visualization – I see it my way IIAction without Interaction • Abstract: Visualization provides computer-supported tools to enable users with insight into their data. Over the last 25 years visualization as a discipline has come a long way in terms of maturity and in providing a rich set of algorithms and systems for visual exploration, analysis, and presentation of data. Interaction is considered a key component in the analysis process. The talk will argue for a sparse and cautious usage of interaction in visualization. The importance of a user centric structuring of interaction functionality will be illustrated with several research examples from our group. Eduard Gröller
