  4. Verb • A word that shows action or a state of being Action verbs*: Swim Run Throw Lie Sing Eat Finish Punch Linking verbs: Is Be Are Been Was Being Were Am *Not a complete list

  5. Adjective • A word that describes a noun or pronoun • It tells these things: • Which one: this, that • What kind: red, large, sick, cloudy, petite • How many: six, four hundred, many, several

Adverb • A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb • It answers these questions: • Where?: there, here, outside, away • When?: now, then, later, immediately, yesterday • How?: quickly, slowly, stupidly, gracefully, effortlessly • How often/how long?: frequently, never, twice, sometimes • How much?: hardly, extremely, greatly, too, more • Most adverbs end in -ly

  7. Preposition • A word that shows how a noun or pronoun related to another part of the sentence • In • On • Of • By • For • With • That • After • Up • Against • Beyond *Think of a squirrel in relation to a house. Any place/action the squirrel can be in comparison to the house is a preposition.

  8. Conjunction • A word that joins words or groups of words • For • And • Nor • But • Or • Yet • So • Either • Because

  9. Interjection • A little word that does these things: • Expresses a feeling: wow, gee, golly, oops, zowie, darn • Says yes or no: yes, no, yep, nope, uh-huh, uh-uh • Calls attention: yo, hey, whoa • Indicates a pause: well, um, hmm, ah
