  2. What makes a believable character? Concreteness: * Have specific homes, possessions, medical histories, political opinions. 2. Symbolic Association: * Express the character’s nature metaphorically through objects or settings. *Symbolic names are also effective in conveying associations.

  3. 3. Speech: * Character’s speech (both content and manner) evoke personality. Aggressive and frank Coy and humorous *Can reflect cultural and ethnic background.

  4. 4. Behavior: * From table manners to hand-in-hand combat should be consistent throughout the story. * The fearless warrior on the battlefield may be terrified of expressing his love to the queen.

  5. 5. Motivation * Characters should have good and sufficient reasons for their actions. * Heroes and villains must both have strong reasons or else the story fails.

  6. 6. Change: * Dynamic characters allow for strong stories. * Characters should respond to their experiences by changing – or work hard to avoid change.

  7. Don’t Mess With Me! Complete the Character Resume for one of the characters you may be thinking about for your story! You may not be able to answer everything on the list, but fill in as much as you can. This will help you brainstorm a character that is complex and interesting.
