  2. Project Information

  3. Baja SAE Competition RIT Baja SAE Unveiling 2009 • Off-road Vehicle Design Competition • Design, Build, Test Off-road Vehicle • 3 Yearly competition • 1 Amphibious Competition • Compete in Areas: • Design Performance • Design Presentation

  4. Phase 0: Mission • Increase the overall competitiveness of the RIT Baja SAE Team • Form a mutually beneficial relationship between the RIT Baja SAE Team and the KGCOE MSD Program • Roadmap the development of cutting edge technologies that will provide an engaging learning experience and benefit the University’s SAE Teams.

  5. Phase 0: Primary Opportunities • Leadership in Automotive Innovation • Long Term Project Goals and Focus • Synergizing Academic and Extracurricular Efforts • Benefit from Outside Perspectives • Benefit from Multidisciplinary Designs • Leveraging Professionalism and formality of Senior design process

  6. Phase 0: Secondary Opportunities • Creating Technologies beneficial to other SAETeams • Aligning with current industry push in drive system development • Aligning with evolution towards integrated electronic controls

  7. Phase 0: Stakeholders Competitive Goals Educational Goals

  8. Phase .5: Former Strategy All previous years 2009 2008 6061 Aluminum Design Carbon Fiber Design Failure Failure 4130 Steel Design Consistent Low Risk Mediocre Performance

  9. Stage .75 : Set Based Concurrent Methodology High Risk, Highly Innovative, Research and Testing Intensive Initial Design Refinement & Continuation Medium Risk and Innovation Release Initial Design Refinement Reliable, Low Risk Release Time

  10. Benefits • Incremental Benefit • Controlling / Learning from Failure • Reduce Wasted Design Effort • Increase Reliability • Forward Looking Approach • Creating Knowledge Base

  11. Phase 1:Benchmarks: A Little Taste Of Baja Suspension and Traction Event Testing durability and capability of suspension and drive systems University of Southern Florida Cage Cam

  12. Benchmarks: History of Evolution Baja Competition Vehicle in 2003 Baja Competition Vehicle Current

  13. Benchmarks: Current Innovations Composite Suspension Components Aluminum Fabricated Suspension Components

  14. Benchmarks:Current Innovations Roller Chain Reduction (late 80’s -2005) Current Planetary/Silent Reduction

  15. Benchmarks:Multi-Disciplinary Competition Trend • Demand for Higher Performance Level • More Sophisticated Design • Increasing Complexity • Increasing development time Increasing Complexity

  16. Benchmarks: RIT Baja SAE DAQ • Driver feedback both real time and stored for later analysis. • The R.I.T. data system includes: • 3-axis accelerometers • Engine RPM • Wheel speed • GPS • 900MHz wireless (20 km range) • SD card slot • Clutch, engine and transmission temperature sensors • Brake and throttle position sensors • USB connectivity • Low oil sensor.

  17. Benchmarks:Auburn University Vehicle and Occupant Interaction Simulation • Graduate Thesis by Aburn Baja SAE team member • Model structural rigidity and driver reactions in simulated crashes and rollovers http://graduate.auburn.edu/fpdb/AUETD/Jarmulowicz_Marc_46.pdf

  18. Benchmarks: P08221 FSAE ECU Team P08221 Poster

  19. Benchmarks: Canadian Engineering Competition • Freshman-Senior Level Design Competition • Attended by many strong Baja SAE Competitors • Focus on: • Early Introduction to Team Oriented Design Process • Design Presentation • Extemporaneous Scientific Debate

  20. Benchmarks: Oregon State Traction Control Braking Based Traction Control Oregon state 2007 • Championed both Design and Endurance Race segments of the Competition • Developed in OSU MSD Program

  21. Phase 2:Customer Interaction • Customer Meeting 4-5-2009 • Created Affinity Diagram with Executive Board

  22. Affinity Diagram Summary • Vehicle Shielding • Design Improvement • Alternate Material’s • Water • Suspension • Brakes • Drive train • Testing • Team Development • Data Collection • Details • Driver Feedback • Documentation • Manufacturing • Current Electric • Stupid Problems • Interpersonal • Public Relations

  23. Objective Tree

  24. Targeted Technologies

  25. Expanding Target Market • Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies • Other SAE Teams • Engineering Classes and Lab usage • Power train System Design • High Performance Vehicle Dynamics • Internal Combustion Engines • General Automotive Option Classes

  26. Remaining Schedule Phase 3 Phase 4 Firing Squad

  27. Identified Risks • Interfacing SD Team with Baja Team • Having Senior Design Team understand design task well without significant involvement of team. • Culture and Thinking • Baja Team relies heavily on short term design cycle • Cost Benefit Perception of the Team

  28. Moving Forward • Thus Far, Focus has been on Establishing needs, contacts, and mitigating team boundaries. • Meet with team to revue details of upcoming competition • Future focus is to be on detailed definitions of projects and Project Readiness Packages • Contact Previous Baja Affiliate Road mapping group
