  1. VOCABULARY WORDSTRAPPED BY THE ICE Please go over the definitions for these vocabulary words with your student. There will be a test on them on Friday. Barren- having little plant or animal life Crevasse- deep hole or crack Deserted- empty; not lived in, or having few or no people Floes- large sheets of floating ice Grueling- very tiring Impassable- not able to be crossed or traveled through Perilous- very dangerous Terrain- land, ground, or earth Created by Mr. Jones

  2. Barren- having little plant or animal life The moon is completely barren of plant and animal life. This shoreline is often barren because of the fluctuations of the water level of this lake.

  3. Crevasse- deep hole or crack A deep crevasse in a glacier. A crevasse stairway in China.

  4. Deserted- empty; not lived in, or having few or no people A deserted island that I might as well call my own.

  5. Floes- large sheets of floating ice The outer coastal fringe of East Greenland retains ice floes even in late summer. This scene, showing the mountains reflected in the calm waters between floes, is from an area known as Liverpool Land. http://www.swisseduc.ch/glaciers/arctic-islands/arctic-05-en.html?id=5

  6. Grueling- very tiring Marathon des Sables, Ouarzazate, MoroccoThe Marathon of the Sands takes place over six grueling days, and stretches 156 miles, the equivalent to six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 52 miles long.http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1728844_1562070,00.html#ixzz0jJocuRUS

  7. Impassable- not able to be crossed or traveled through This is as far as the fisherman come. The rocky cliffs in the background are impassible.

  8. Perilous- very dangerous Is window washing perilous? How is the pay? Yea, this might be perilous – a giant, hungry snow snake.

  9. Terrain- land, ground, or earth This map shows the terrain around Hollywood, CA.
