Mission Statement • The goal of the SEDC is to improve air quality by encouraging the use of clean, renewable energy and by reducing diesel emissions from existing engines and equipment from the agriculture, heavy construction and on-road sectors.
The Team • Over 600 members who participate in various calls/meetings and/or are on the mailing list • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) • over 40 groups sign on from all 8 southeast states including the Governors of Tennessee and Kentucky • three State agriculture commissioners • two environmental secretaries • 15 industry representatives • five state farm bureaus • finance/capital organizations, and a variety of state, local and federal partners representing all the strategic sectors in the SEDC
Pre-Season Efforts • Region 4 diesel efforts began in earnest in 2002 with 1st successful diesel retrofit conference in US • Southeast has completed over the past 5 years: • 150 biodiesel projects • 17 Truck Stop Electrification Projects • 41 School Bus projects impacting over 4,000 buses • 45 on-off road projects impacting approximately 4,500 engines • 17 idle reduction policies including some statewide policies
State Leadership • AL – Dedicated funds for retrofits and biodiesel – City of Birmingham • FL Energy Plan • GA Adopt-a-School Bus Program • KY – CMAQ and Clean Construction • MS – Ag & Commerce Alternative Energy • NC Sustainable funding-grant program & statewide idle reduction program • SC – dedicated funds for school bus replacements • TN DOT CMAQ – clean construction • TN Biodiesel Fuel Quality Standard

Research/Technology • NC State University Solar Center - $2 million over 3 years for retrofit projects using CMAQ funding • Regionally Applied Research Effort (RARE)- will support research by Mississippi State University to produce biodiesel. • York State Technical College – Retrofit nonroad equipment & biodiesel production • Emory University and SACE • University of Georgia and EPRIDA • NC A & T University • University of South Carolina • Auburn – Alternative biofuel feedstocks
