  8. Planned Tasks • Build and manage a printed map collection • Create maps -digitizing, printing and production services • Provide public access and services to printed maps, digital maps, and geospatial data packages and datasets • Future Actions

  9. 1. Build and manage a printed map collection • The geographic focus of FIU Libraries map collection will be on South Florida and the Latin America and Caribbean region. We are requesting a resource budget of $5,000 per year for maps and cartographic materials in printed formats. • Map cataloging will be conducted within MIUS, using the GIS Center developed EML metadata system, which is in compliance with national standards. However, we don’t exclude looking at the new library system, and going with the traditional library map cataloging route. We will have Giovanni Graziosi trained in map cataloging. • Map furniture -MIUS will utilize existing map cabinets and the donation from NOAA library for storing printed maps. MIUS will also be equipped with a large digitizing table and several hanging shelves for maps viewing and digitizing

  10. 2. Create maps -digitizing, printing and production services • Hardware: 1 digitizing table, 1 drum stick scanner, 1 flat bed scanner, 1 digital camera and deck, 2 networked computer workstations for data input and production, 1 large plotter, 1 laser printer for output purpose. • Software: image processing (ERDAS), digitizing (Coral Draw or equivalent), GIS (ArcGIS), and all other supporting software • Service Policy, Fee if applicable, and procedure, see http://gislab.fiu.edu/portal/Services/Printing/tabid/88/Default.aspx • Service Schedule: 9-5 M-F. (When the staff in break in the Service Unit, a sign can be put out to defer the patron to the Research Unit

  11. 3. Provide public access and services to printed maps, digital maps and geospatial datasets • Printed maps – can be searched and retrieved from drawers; as well as digitized, scanned and copied, or checked out for in-library use. • Duplication and/or digitizing of printed maps, will require a service fee to cover staff time and materials. Library patrons can also perform these tasks for free using user guides (except for materials used for printing/plotting). • Digitally scanned maps from in house or other web sites (e.g. PALMM LC collection) can be plotted or printed with the cost to cover materials. Poster Printing will also be available with a minimal cost to cover materials costs. • Provide state-of-the-art equipment and materials for imagery and data retrieval, display, and visualization. • Assistance for downloading geo-spatial data and/or extracting census or other statistical information will be available onsite. Extensive assistance (more than 1 hour) for data preparation and analysis will be assessed at a fee of $50/hour). This service will be supported by the Research Unit when necessary.

  12. 4. Future Actions • Conduct full inventory of existing maps, hardware, software and office equipment. • Develop MIUS collection, mission statement, and resource budget. • Finalize MIUS floor area plan • Identify and assess map needs from interested faculty and staff members . • Acquire additional maps, materials to equip MIUS for grand opening
