  2. Caleshia Clayton Terms: Compromise & Control

  3. Comprise Compromiseis when two or more individuals have different views or ideas on a matter and they deliberate to find a common ground where both or all parties can agree and move forward with the matter. In The Negotiator, Danny Roman’s position as the negotiator on the police force was compromised. His partner Nate was killed by other members on the force because he was investigating the money that had come up missing. The same guys that killed Nate framed Danny for the murder and wanted to send him to prison for it, but Danny wasn’t giving up without a fight. Danny took Nabob, another police officer and two other citizen’s hostage on the 20th floor inside of the Federal building. He than began to negotiate with the force on his terms. In speaking with Sullivan, another negotiator, Danny told him he wasn’t letting the others go unless he could clear his name. As a compromise Sullivan was to give him information he wanted to help aid in clearing his name. In return for each piece of information, he would let one hostage go, if he couldn’t deliver, the hostage’s would remain with him.

  4. Control Control is when someone or something has the upper hand and has major influence on what happens next. During the hostage crisis the police force had difficulty trying to negotiate with Danny Roman. This was because Danny was the negotiator on the force. Because of his many years on the police force and as the top negotiator, Danny was an expert. All though they tried to throw him off track many times, he was too smart for it. He would re-inform the officers on the protocol. He knew the officers very well, as co-workers and as friends. This gave Danny all power. He was in control of the situation and no matter how they tried to deceive him and work there way in to the building, because of his knowledge; Danny stayed 2 steps ahead of them. He knew every move they would make. So, in order to keep the hostages safe they had to do as he said.

  5. Leovic Mecado Terms: Self-Disclosure & Direct Aggression

  6. Self-Disclosure Self-Disclosure: The process of deliberately revealing information about oneself that is significant and that would not normally be known by others.  Example: Nate talks to Danny in his car privately about very important information he knows regarding a fraud with the pension/ disability fund. Nate makes Danny aware that he's sharing it because they are work partners.

  7. Direct Aggression Direct Aggression  An expression of the sender’s thoughts or feelings or both that attacks the position and dignity of the receiver. Example: After Nate's dead Danny is brought into a room with some superiors and they try to get more detailed info Nate could've told him. He responds very aggressively and refuses to continue the conversation insults them and walks out of the room.

  8. Tori Moss-Desormier Terms: Strategy &Conflict

  9. Strategy • Strategy – A defense-arousing style of communication in which the sender tries to manipulate or trick; also, the general term for any type of plan, as in the plan for persuasive speech. • After Danny Roman was framed for Nate's murder, the police wanted him arrested and put in jail, but Danny took the situation into his own hands by developing a strategy to clear his name. This consisted of holding officers and citizens hostage in a federal building until his demands were met.

  10. Conflict • Conflict - An expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce rewards, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals. • Danny wants his name cleared, and the police want Danny in jail. Once the police took an interest in Danny as the murderer, conflict began because Danny had been framed and did not deserve to go to jail.

  11. Vic Joseph Terms: Meta-communication & Controlling Communication

  12. Meta-Communication Meta-communication - (relational) messages that are talking about another message, also known as communication about communication. Danny Roman lets his wife know that he is now a married man and he will not be doing anything crazy or stupid and he will be coming home every night. Crazy is on the bus and it has left.

  13. Controlling Communication Controlling Communication - a way for one person to control the response of the receiver, the result is usually defensive Roman goes to Niebaum to ask him what is going on since his name came up in an earlier conversation with his partner Nate, but Niebaum insist that he is guilty and he should carry on his conversation with the judge and asks another cop to remove him from his office, forcibly. This action results in Roman taking hostages to prove his point and get the results (clearing his name) that he is looking for.
